ATO moves further on the road to all-digital future Featured

By

The Australian Taxation Office continues to ramp up the transformation of services to taxpayers to the online environment, with its latest improvement involving the extension of voice authentication to the ATO app.

The step up in voice authentication services and move to the mobile app announced on Tuesday followed the ATO’s Monday announcement that it had opened a community consultation process on its Digital By Default initiative aimed at delivering a simpler, easier, more flexible and adaptable way of interacting digitally with the ATO.

Assistant Commissioner John Dardo said on Tuesday that the extension of voice authentication to the mobile app provides individuals and sole traders with “faster, easier access to the ATO’s online services”.

The ATO’s online services allow you to lodge a tax return, check and consolidate your super, manage PAYG instalments and lodge, view, revise and pay activity statements.”

“The availability of the authentication service on the ATO app comes after the ATO has used voice authentication to verify taxpayers’ identity over the phone for over a year.

Dardo said the solution is the largest and most advanced in Australia and one of the most advanced voice technology implementations in the world, and since September 2014, more than 1.3 million taxpayers have enrolled their voiceprints and have been using their voiceprints to authenticate themselves when calling the ATO.

“With people using their smartphones and tablets for their day-to-day tasks more than ever, we wanted to make it as easy as possible for clients to use our services on their devices.

“You will need to have the ATO linked to your myGov account before enrolling a voiceprint via the ATO app.

“To enrol your voiceprint, just open the individuals’ section of the app, select online services, log into your myGov account and follow the prompts. Save your voiceprint to your device and next time you can use your voice to log in. You can then also use your voiceprint to verify your identity if you need to phone us.”

Individuals and sole traders can download the latest version of the ATO app from their app store and enrol their voiceprint now.
