Users of Android smartphones in Victoria will have an advantage over their iPhone compatriots due to the fact that the recently provided functionality to use a myki on a smartphone is limited to Google's mobile operating system.

Market research and analysis Roy Morgan said in a statement that 2.9 million Melburnians used public transport during an average three months. This was the equivalent of 71% of residents.

Only Android users who use Google's payment platform, Google Pay, can download a myki onto their smartphones.

The company said nearly two-fifths of Melbourne’s public transport users (39%) used an Android phone while nearly half, 48%, used an Apple iPhone. The remaining 13% either could not say or used a lesser used phone such as a Windows phone.

Analysis showed that millennials would derive the greatest benefit from the new functionality. Forty-seven percent of Melbourne transport users who belonged to this generation used Android phones – the highest for any age-group.

In contrast, those of the pre-boomers generation, born before 1946, were the least likely to use Android phones with only 21% of Melbourne transport users doing so.

Roy Morgan chief executive Michelle Levine said: "Analysing Melbourne’s nearly three million public transport users who use the city’s buses, trains or trams in an average three months shows over 1.1 million (39%) use an Android phone as their main mobile phone.

She said the myki functionality was not yet available for the more than 1.4 million public transport users in Melbourne (48%) who used an iPhone although the Victorian Government had promised to provide this feature sometime in the future.
