In late November 2021, I wrote about the launch of Meredot's wireless charging stations and inexpensive wireless charging upgrade kits for virtually every popular model of e-scooter out there, and you can read that article here.
At CES 2022, I was able to meet with Meredot's CEO, Roman Bysko where I was able to see the charger itself, and talk to Roman about the technology and the inspiration behind it.
For individuals at home who want to upgrade their e-scooter to wireless charging technology, the upgrade kit costs approximately 50 Euros, and the wireless charging station, upon which any compatible e-scooter with inbuilt or added wireless charging capability can be placed - at any angle, with nothing to plug in, and nothing to maintain.
For home users, the Meredot wireless charger would cost 600 Euros, but Meredot's market is operators with fleets of e-scooters in cities and countries around the world, whereupon prices would obviously be a lot keener to due the volume purchases this would entail.
If you could use a paid e-scooter that was available to rent as many e-scooters are in cities across the world, or your own e-scooter, and know that you could place it on a charging station at your destination so that it was freshly charged when you left, or at least was topped up, it would make the usage experience of wirelessly charged e-scooters much more useful and available, without needing to worry about power.
That would certainly be the case for intercity and intra-suburb uses, and I see this as a very exciting technology that it would be great to see more widely rolled out and adopted worldwide.
I've been using a range of Ryobi's battery-powered devices for gardening, and they're certainly powerful and utterly mobile, without the issues of 2 or 4 stroke engines, engine noise and exhaust fumes, so battery-powered tech has never been ore advanced or easier to charge.
A wireless charging system is even better, and without the need to carefully place an e-scooter in a specific spot, you get the freedom to park your scooter any way you like on the charging pad, and it starts charging, which is extremely simple.
So, e-scooter fleet operators and e-scooter owners - a powerful new upgrade is available, and it's being made by Meredot, so I hope we see rapid adoption of this technology!
