VIDEO: Kobo launches rewards loyalty program for bookworms

By

Billing itself as ‘the first and only global eBookstore to offer a rewards program for booklovers’, Kobo Super Points aims to make reading more rewarding.

Rakuten Kobo, the name of the company behind the Kobo eBookstore, has launched a rewarding new loyalty program ‘designed to celebrate the love of reading.’

No doubt the program will also help Kobo celebrate the love of selling ebooks, but hey, rewards programs always exist to reward the retailer as well as the consumer.

In any case, the program works by ensuring Kobo’s customers ‘instantly earn points with every eBook and magazine purchase they make online at Kobo’s site, or via Kobo's free reading app.’

Points by themselves are useless, just electronic zeroes and ones in a computer database, unless you can redeem them for someone, and naturally, Kobo’s redemption offer ensures you can redeem those points ‘from a catalogue of more than one million titles across a variety of genres.’

At this stage, Kobo readers in the Australia, the US, the UK, New Zealand and Canada are eligible to earn points - and redeem them.

Here’s Kobo’s promotional video - the article continues thereafter!

As with most rewards points programs, earning points is easy enough.

To start with, you automatically begin receiving Super Points when you sign in to your Kobo account and make a purchase - which is something you’re likely to if you’re already a Kobo customer, or plan to become one.

Your points balance, which is part of your personal profile, can be monitored through the new Kobo Super Points dashboard, but Kobo is going to spice things up a little with some free points for its top 25,000 readers, who will get 2,500 Super Points each.

That’s enough for a qualifying Kobo customer to claim their first ‘gift’.

If you’re a Kobo customer or soon will be, you’ll be able to access your Kobo Super Points member page here

Michael Tamblyn, President of Rakuten Kobo said: While we're constantly looking for ways to amplify the reading experience, we also remain focused on how we can delight our new and existing customers.

“The Kobo Super Points program is our way of acknowledging loyal readers for doing what they love most, and we look forward to thanking our customers by rewarding them with the content they enjoy."

Now, lest you think that’s it, there’s more in the form of two tiers of this Super Points offer.

The first tier is free membership, allowing ‘readers to earn 100 Kobo Super Points for every $10 spent on eBooks and magazines, and points can be redeemed once 2,400 have been earned.’

For faster accumulation, the program offers extra points on Kobo's Bonus Days, and also offers the option to upgrade to a VIP Membership for either $10 or 4,000 Super Points per year.

With leads us to the second tier - VIP membership. No, it’s not a so-called VIP room filled with poker machines, but instead the much more interesting opportunity to earn double the points per purchase, and access to an ‘array of exciting discounts and offerings,’ all for the aforementioned $10 or 4000 points per year.

Benefits include a discount of 10% off an exclusive list of more than one million titles every day, as well as getting an additional 10% select Kobo promotions, topped off with receiving one free eBook of your choosing every year.

Kobo’s Tamblyn said: “Beginning today, every Kobo customer can enjoy the perks of immediate Super Points and will be able to redeem them as quickly as they are earned.

“While receiving Super Points as a Free Member is automatic, passionate readers who choose to upgrade to a Kobo VIP Membership will amplify their earning rate - often at a discounted price - and will be able to get their hands on their next read that much faster."

Naturally, Kobo encourages reading enthusiasts the world over to visit Kobo’s website ‘for all their eReading essentials,’ where you can browse through and buy ‘the latest eBooks, magazines, eReaders and accessories, customers can also receive reading recommendations, purchase Kobo gift cards, and learn the benefits of reading anywhere on any device with the free Kobo app.’
