Microsoft appears to have been unaware last week of a fact that security researchers have discovered: nearly all the victims of the the WannaCry ransomware attack were Windows 7 machines, with XP machines mostly crashing before the malware gained a foothold.

After a week when people learned that ransomware can take over their lives, the question must needs be asked: why is it that this kind of malware seems to attack only Windows?

Security firm Sophos appears to be unaware that when one is in a hole, it is time to stop digging. Nothing else can account for the fact that when the company found itself with egg on its face over the WannaCry ransomware attack, it chose to try and "clarify" things.
