Vic tradies are BRIQing it with a new way to qualify for a Victorian Builders License

Elegant Media, one of Australia's top app and software development companies, has created what it says is "a revolutionary go-to learning app for tradespersons to successfully qualify for their builder’s licence without leaving the worksite" called BRIQ.

Anushka Bandara, the CEO and Co-Founder of Elegant Media said in announcing the new app: “BRIQ is an intuitive self-training platform housing all the essential resources to guide tradies through all of the knowledge, testing and preparation they need to crush their licence exam. It allows tradespersons to ditch the costly and inconvenient classroom environment and learn at their own leisure.

“It has been a pleasure to work alongside brothers, Michael Vernon and Lee Vernon – the cofounders of BRIQ. Their concept for BRIQ is something unmatched in the market, so it has been incredibly rewarding to work collaboratively on such an advanced project. BRIQ is now available to download from the App Store.”

Elegant Media reminds us it is "a full-service mobile app development and software solutions provider for businesses, governments, entrepreneurs and corporates of all sizes to develop and deliver cutting-edge tech solutions. With hundreds of mobile app projects completed, their team is one of the most experienced teams in Australia." It says it is also "the only app developer in Australia with ISO accreditation and also hold Apple and Google accreditation."

BRIQ cofounder Michael Vernon said: "Up until recently, electricians and plumbers have pretty much been the only two licenced trades, meaning you can perform the work without being a registered electrical or plumber. Likewise, a builder was required to be registered when conducting work over $10,000 in value or structural work.

"Recent legislative changes, however, are making so building industry trades in Victoria, will in effect be licenced similar to electricians and plumbers. Starting off with carpenters, the format of their assessment will be similar to the DBU. BRIQ is set up and ready to cater for all trades as required.

“The idea for BRIQ was born out of my brother’s, and now cofounder, frustration. Lee had his sights set on elevating his career and getting his Victorian Builders Licence – but getting there wasn’t easy. It was a hard slog. Having only one option for the mandatory education, Lee’s only choice was to take up an expensive, classroom course, one that seemed designed for people to fail. Most tradies will fail their builder’s exam the first time they take it and waste thousands of dollars and hours of time in the process.

“We knew there had to be a better, easier and more accessible way to study. From there our mission was clear – to take the building industry’s learning environment out of the dark ages and into the palm of your hand.

"It is true, the majority of builders fail their Victorian Builders Licence exam the first time around. A Certificate 4 in building and construction simply doesn't teach you to be able to navigate the building rules/regulation books, the result is wasted nights at school and thousands of dollars in enrolment.

“Whereas, with BRIQ we have a 100 percent success rate for participants of the Victorian Licence Exam, we're not here to teach you how to do your job, we're here to teach you how to use your books so you can get that pass.”

According to Vernon, the Victorian Builders Licence exam is significantly more difficult than people expect, which is why most people need to take expensive night classes. There is an enormous amount of information to learn across a very broad scope of areas and very large regulation manuals to navigate in preparation.

“Created right here in Melbourne, BRIQ was designed by tradies, for tradies, with the express purpose of helping you get qualified in the building industry. Unlike a classroom, it’s individualised learning that’s tailored to you. BRIQ gamifies the experience to keep you engaged and practicing anywhere, anytime. We have generated this quiz style app to spruce up the content and help aspiring builders memorise all the content, navigate the manuals and prepare for the exam in their own time using microlearning techniques,” Michael Vernon added.

According to Bandara, BRIQ features an AI technology that caters an individualised learning experience for users. The coursework is streamlined to cut out the fluff and fast track each tradespersons route to getting a PASS in their exam by identifying where the holes in each person’s learning sit. The app registers where the weak points lay to personalise practice exam questions that target areas the user needs to improve on.

“Obviously, lockdowns are another great example of why classroom training isn’t always an accessible learning option for tradesmen. This learning environment can also be a struggle for full-time workers to commit to in addition to work, family and other commitments, so bringing the content to the palm of their hand is a great support.

"BRIQ has been built so that it is the most comprehensive and up-to-date destination for all the information you need to know in the lead-up to taking your builder’s licence exam. We have ensured that if there is any legislation changes, or updates, you don’t need to wait for someone to print a new book – it is immediately updated within the app,” Bandara said.

“BRIQ also offers full support for the application process for your Victorian Builder Licence through our Premium service. In addition to the interview with a panel of Victorian Builders Association members and the formal exam, there is a large amount of paperwork and documentation required to fulfill the application which many aspiring builders find overwhelming and difficult. BRIQ manages this process to ensure tradesman have everything they need to nail it, without having to think about it.”

Michael Vernon concluded: “Elegant Media have been an absolute delight to work alongside on this project. From our initial meeting, they immediately understood our vision for BRIQ and were able to make it come to life. Anushka was an absolute professional and I would recommend his services to anyone looking to embark on an app journey.”
