Sony and Mitsui enabling Dynamic Spectrum Access System

Sony chairman president and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and Mitsui president and CEO Kenichi Hori, jointly announced that they have achieved the world’s first successful operation of Sony’s Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) technology in a standalone 5G environment. Along with this success, the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding to enter a partnership to study the commercial potential for this technology and ways to use it to support effective use of spectrum resources.

Background

The companies said that spectrum resources are limited, and the strain on these resources is becoming an issue. DSA technology is expected to help solve this problem by optimising the use of radio frequency resources. The companies say that it provides for centralised management of radio frequencies via a real-time resource management database, replacing the traditional method of managing each frequency band separately.

Sony and Mitsui say that this allows spatio-temporally under-utilised spectrum to be allocated for use by new operators and users, while protecting incumbent operator networks and their users from harmful interference.

Practical implementation of DSA technology is already under way in Europe and the United States, with spectrum assignment for 4G/5G in certain regions and locations, along with infrastructure development, making it a growing global trend, the companies said.

Accompanying this kind of diversification occurring in radio frequency resource assignment methods, new use cases and innovation in various industry applications, as well as automated spectrum management using DSA technology, are also being explored, leading Sony and Mitsui to join forces in looking into the commercial potential.

Sony and Mitsui track records and the partnership goals

Mitsui says it is involved in a wide range of industrial domains, employing a multifaceted business approach, including building social infrastructure that uses ICT to drive smart transformation of cities and building sustainable infrastructure to improve quality of life in Asian and other developing nations.

Also, through its subsidiary, Mitsui Knowledge Industry, the company is driving the use of “Local 5G,” an advanced scheme for implementing local 5G networks in Japan, in view of the growing need for wireless usage in industrial applications.

Sony said it has built its track record by engaging in research and development of DSA technology since an early stage. In the world’s first case of large-scale practical implementation on the Citizens Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) system in the United States, Sony has been approved by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for commercial operation to provide spectrum management services (spectrum assignment, spectrum use authorisation, operational parameter configuration such as maximum allowable transmission power) in the 3.5 GHz band (3GPP B48/n48).

Also, based on this approval, Sony has been designated a CBRS SAS administrator to operate in the United States and is recognised for holding excellent commercial-level technologies and many vital patents.

Sony and Mitsui aim to build on these strengths to implement an effective spectrum utilisation model and establish cutting-edge business and technology platforms to help achieve this goal across a broad geographic area, which includes not only Japan, the U.S. and Europe, but also Asia and other regions, as they work together to explore various possibilities. Through this project, they aim to create new businesses meeting continuously growing wireless demands that provide a strong contribution to society.

DSA application in Australia

The applications in Australia are probably well out in the future.

Possible applications might be assigning:

  • spectrum for a private event, e.g., telemetry for a F1 or motor rallying event.
  • spectrum for public safety were an incident requires large numbers of emergency personnel with bandwidth hungry applications.
  • spectrum on a temporary basis for private use for industry, e.g., during day-light hours then reassigning back to consumer use in peak evening hours.
  • and managing white-space spectrum.

I do recall a merchant bank, a couple of decades ago, exploring 'spectrum trading'. Their concept was for spectrum holders to have spectrum available for short term lease and that operators would 'just turn it on' in a particular area, for a period of time. Conceptually a good idea, however as I advised, at the time, unworkable. The amount of time and administration required to bring spectrum on-line was lengthy. Perhaps this solution could reinvigorate this commercial construct.

    The physical design of the new headphones is about comfort as well as performance. The combination of soft fit synthetic leather and a stepless slider are said to provide all-day comfort.

    "All-day" also applies to the battery life: Sony claims 30 hours from a single charge, and the WH-1000XM5 can be connected to a USB Power Delivery source to take on three hours worth of charge in three minutes.

    Other functions include support for resuming Spotify playback without touching the phone, warnings when the volume is higher than that recommended by the World Health Organisation, compatibility with Google Assistant and Alexa, and the ability to pair with two devices at the same time, automatically switching when necessary to take incoming calls.

    The WH-1000XM5 incorporates recycled plastic materials from automobile parts.

    Australian release is scheduled for late June 2022, with a suggested retail price of $649.95.

  • Trellix releases global threat research on organisation and nation-state cyber threats

    Cybersecurity is a continual problem for enterprises, governments, small businesses, and home users alike. Yet, not all cyber threats are the same. Research from Trellix finds it is Governments who are behind many of the most dramatic breaches in recent times.

    The Trellix global threat research, In the crosshairs: Organisations and nation-state cyber threats, shockingly reveals the service disruptions, exposed data, and substantial financial costs of the SolarWinds breach, the Microsoft Exchange Hafnium incident, and other high-profile attacks were all driven by nation-state cyberattacks.

    State attackers are relentless, and while cyberattacks can come from anywhere it is the government-driven nation-state attacks, along with their criminal proxies, which are the most dangerous because they are the most capable and best-resourced, and are persistent in their determination.

    Trellix explains it's a huge problem for the international community; victim organisations lose reputation, have innovation investments exposed or diluted, and suffer in numerous ways. In fact, Trellix finds cybercrime costs the world an estimated one trillion dollars per year.

    Trellix expects this will only increase because it is so rewarding to the perpetrators and there are so few penalties. How can companies defend themselves, and how can legislators develop policies to respond to nation-state actors?

    These are the questions Trellix sought to answer, along with how organisations perceive and prepare for the threat of nation-state actors and how their perception actually aligns with the motivations and effects of such attacks.

    Trellix surveyed 800 IT security decision-makers across the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Japan, India, and Australia over November and December 2021. Respondents came from organisations with 500 or more employees from a range of industries predominantly focused on critical infrastructure.

    In the crosshairs: Organisations and nation-state cyber threats, by Trellix global research, is the result; an easily-digested - but gripping and sobering - 21-page report that CISOs, business leaders, and legislators must read.

    Trellix found the line between state and non-state actors continues to blur and 86% of respondents believe they have been targeted by a cyberattack from an organisation acting on behalf of a nation-state. Yet, Trellix also found only 27% of respondents are confident they can differentiate between nation-state and other cyberattacks.

    Trellix found state actors are more likely to focus on data than financial benefit, though it still incurs an estimated cost to the victim of more than one million dollars per incident.

    Despite this, Trellix also found that 10% of organisations surveyed still do not have a cybersecurity strategy. Many respondents indicated limited skills and outdated network technology and security tools increase their vulnerability.

    91% of respondents think the government needs to be doing more to support organisations and defend infrastructure against state-backed cyberattacks.

    This is the milieux that Trellix finds global businesses sitting in. So what do we do? How can your business effectively protect itself when North Korea wants money to prop up the Kim Jong-un regime or simply takes offence, such as when Sony Pictures was hacked after releasing a movie seen as an insult to the Great Leader? What do you do to protect your business when the Russian state targets espionage in the energy sector or seeks to spread disinformation? Or, even when it targets a political enemy but its effects spread, as in the case of NotPetya which was aimed at the Ukrainian government but went worldwide? How can your business protect itself from Chinese government-sponsored IP theft? Trellix provides details on dozens of cyberattacks carried out by state actors for over a decade.

    Trellix finds companies and government agencies need to make decisions in an uncertain environment to protect against a range of threats. The consequences are serious for not doing so.

    However, thankfully, Trellix also finds better cybersecurity is not dependent on full certainty in the attribution of an attacker or their motives. There is still much that can be done even if it cannot be ascertained who is behind an incident.

    Consequently, Trellix advocates regardless of sector, organisations must ensure a baseline level of cyber hygiene and training to best defend against a wide range of incidents.

    This includes updating defence capabilities, identifying what needs to be protected, assessing actual capacity, reviewing third-party providers, and increasing communication.

    It's easy to say, but as the research findings identify, there are still too many companies not putting basic precautions into place.

    The report is disturbing yet gripping and pulls back the covers on the shady world of cybercrime that’s well-funded and well-protected by governments themselves as they commit cyber warfare. For any business caught in the middle, you must acknowledge this is today’s reality, and you must take action.

    Offering a unique ring design, Sony's LinkBuds wireless earbuds offer audio transparency so you can enjoy all the content you listen to, while still being able to hear the car horn while you cross the street traditional headphones can hide in all that sound.

    If you've ever heard of bone conduction headphones, you know they vibrate the bones in your ears to transmit sound, letting you listen while not actually having anything in your ears.

    Sony's LinkBuds are NOT bone conduction headphones, but they aim to offer the same benefits, with Sony describing them as "a new way to enjoy your favourite music and the important moments in life, all at once."

    These brand-new headphones are naturally truly wireless, and they let you stay connected and aware with the help of the open ring design with audio transparency, with an ultra-small super fit and what Sony promises is crystal-clear sound and call quality.

    Sony combined the unique design with sensor and spatial sound technologies, and this is enabling the company to create new sound experiences together with its partners, such as AR gaming, new work from home experiences, sound AR navigation, and quick access to music.

    Sony explains its LinkBuds have been created with a unique open ring design that allows you to tune into the outside world whenever you want, without compromising your listening experience.

    LinkBuds contain a newly-developed ring driver unit has the centre of the diaphragm, open for audio transparency, allowing you to clearly hear the sounds around, so you’ll always know when someone calls your name or easily chat with friends while listening to your favourite songs.

    As you'd expect, Sony says the new design makes LinkBuds "the perfect companion" for a range of uses, including working from home, gaming, listening to music, and more.

    They also promise a super small, ergonomic design, approximately four grams in weight. In addition, the protective surface covering the speaker diaphragm is integrated within the housing, saving space. Sony explains the overall shape has been crafted with the use of extensive ear shape data, collated since it introduced the world’s first in-ear headphones in 1982, meaning we’ll barely notice wearing them.

    What about the sound quality?

    We’re promised the ability to make calls without noise, for crystal clear conversations. LinkBuds offer a “precise voice pickup technology” that performs advanced voice signal processing, while Sony’s noise reduction algorithm, developed using AI machine learning, uses more than 500 million voice samples to suppress ambient noise and extract your voice clearly.

    LinkBuds promise to let you hear people, when you need to, even when you’re in noisy situations.

    As for audio, there’s the promise of high quality sound, thanks to DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine,) which ensures your personal soundtrack will be restored to high quality.

    Sony’s Integrated Processor V1 reproduces all the detail in your music with minimal distortion, for what is called “a stunningly authentic listening experience,” so your favourite artists always sound great. A specially designed 12mm ring driver provides rich, well-balanced sound.

    There’s also an Adaptive Volume Control feature that automatically optimises volume based on where you are, letting your music seamlessly blend into your environment. This allows you to listen to your favourite tracks at a comfortable volume and in a variety of environments, to enhance the open-air listening experience.

    In addition, LinkBuds feature a “Wide Area Tap” so all control is at your fingertips. By double or triple tapping in front of either of your ears, you can adjust playback to your liking – there’s no need to touch the LinkBuds themselves.
