Qualcomm unveils new features in Snapdragon X70 Modem-RF system

Qualcomm Technologies announced at the Qualcomm 5G Summit event new capabilities and milestones for the Snapdragon X70 5G Modem-RF System.

Qualcomm says that this builds on the fifth-generation 5G modem-to-antenna solution announced in February at MWC Barcelona.

Harnessing the power of AI for breakthrough 5G performance with 10 Gigabit 5G downloads, incredible upload speeds, low latency, coverage, and power efficiency, Snapdragon X70 offers ultimate flexibility to global 5G operators to maximise spectrum resources for the best possible 5G connectivity.

Snapdragon X70 provides advanced capabilities such as Qualcomm 5G AI Suite, Qualcomm® 5G Ultra-Low Latency Suite, Qualcomm® 5G PowerSave Gen 3, uplink carrier aggregation, standalone mmWave and 4X sub-6 carrier aggregation to achieve unmatched 5G performance.

New features and achievements facilitated by the upgradable architecture of Snapdragon X70 include:

Qualcomm Smart Transmit 3.0 technology, the company says this is an upgraded system-level feature licensed by Qualcomm Technologies that now extends support to Wi-Fi and Bluetooth transmit power management. It enables real-time averaging of transmit power across 2G-5G, mmWave, Wi-Fi (2.4GHz 6/6E/7), and Bluetooth (2.4) radios to superior radio performance.

Qualcomm advises that Smart Transmit 3.0 extends 5G coverage and improve uplink speeds, optimising transmissions across cellular, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth antennas. Smart Transmit 3.0 helps devices smartly manage transmit power, allowing users to enjoy faster, more reliable connectivity.

5G standalone mmWave connection <<bold>> , with peak speeds of more than 8 Gbps achieved using Keysight’s 5G Protocol R&D Toolset with a test 5G device powered by Snapdragon X70. Qualcomm stated that 5G standalone mmWave allows for the deployment of 5G mmWave networks and devices without using an anchor on sub-6 GHz spectrum. This gives operators more flexibility to deliver wireless fibre broadband access with multi-Gigabit speeds and ultra-low latency to residential and commercial customers. Through this product demonstration, Qualcomm says it illustrates its commitment to new and world-class 5G advancements for devices and networks.

“Snapdragon X70 gives operators the ability to deliver extreme 5G capacity, multi-Gigabit data speeds, and new use cases across devices from smartphones to laptops, fixed wireless access equipment, industrial machines, and more,” said Qualcomm Technologies senior vice president and general manager cellular modems and infrastructure Durga Malladi. “We look forward to working with industry leaders to advance 5G to power best-in-class connectivity experiences at the connected intelligent edge and transform industries across consumer, enterprise and industrial settings.”

At the Qualcomm 5G Summit event, the company also demonstrated other Snapdragon X70 capabilities, such as AI-enhanced 5G performance, and 5G sub-6 GHz carrier aggregation across three TDD channels – delivering up to 6 Gbps peak download speeds. 5G carrier aggregation enables enhanced average speeds and more robust connections in challenging conditions, such as cell-edge far from the cellular base stations.

  • Review: With Find X5 Pro, Oppo can pose challenge to Apple and Samsung

    There is little doubt in the mind of any observer of the smartphone industry that, after the disappearance of Huawei as a frontrunner, two Chinese brands — Oppo and Xiaomi — have been vying to take up the fight to market leaders Apple and Samsung.

    The latest Oppo flagship — the Find X5 Pro — appears to be built with this consideration in mind, with the company taking great pains to offer top-notch hardware, extremely fast charging, a big battery and an excellent display among a host of other notable features.

    Price-wise, the Pro matches the top models from Apple and Samsung, with an Australian RRP of $1799. On the marketing side, too, Oppo has gone hard, perhaps having become cognisant that its efforts in this direction have been a little lukewarm until now.

    Weighing in at 218 grammes, the Pro is a work of art, with a black body, somewhat reminiscent of the Samsung Galaxy, cloaked in a black protective case. Neither Apple nor Samsung offer such cases along with the phone.

    {loadposition sam08}The rear camera bump is fashioned in such a way, sloping down, so as to make it almost level at one end with the ceramic rear of the device. It is extremely pleasing to the eye.

    The LTPO2 AMOLED display measures 6.7 inches, offers a choice of refresh rates – up to 120Hz and up to 60 Hz; the former is snappy as expected and makes it a pleasure to use. Once again, top marks to Oppo for this display.

    What are now standard features for a phone in this price range — fingerprint and face recognition, IP68 water and dust resistance and 1440 x 3216 resolution — are all present.

    On the charging front, Oppo supplies an 80W Supervooc charger — neither Apple nor Samsung offer chargers — that can charge the device to 100% in a little less than 30 minutes. Wireless charging is also available, at 50W, though one would have buy a charger for $129 to use this feature.

    The fingerprint recognition is done through the front display, unlike in some cheaper Oppo models where it is through the on-off button.

    Oppo lags behind in name recognition when it competes against both Apple and Samsung – and this seems to be why it has tied up with Hasselblad for camera technology. But it is difficult to pick what has changed with the introduction of Hasselblad, as Oppo has always offered good cameras.

    The Pro is built atop a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC which uses a 4nm process. It tends to run a bit hot at times, when it is pushed to the hilt. But with 12GB of memory, that does not happen very often and the overall experience is extremely pleasant.

    The Pro comes with Android 12 and over this is overlaid Oppo's own ColorOS, the latter at version 12.1.

    The 50MP f/1.7 main camera has a 50MP f/2.2 ultrawide snapper that has a 110-degree field of view and a 13MP f/2.4 telephoto camera with 2x optical zoom. The selfie camera is a single 32 MP, f/2.4.

    The Pro has a new neural processing unit known as MariSilicon X which is claimed to improve video footage taken at night. Photos are very good overall, with bright colours, but low-light pictures still have some way to go before they are par for the course.

    One can zoom in more than 2x, but the effect is not very good. At 2x, the images are clear and sharp.

    The Pro has excellent sound, no matter whether one uses Bluetooth headphones or not. One oddity I experienced was that it refused to pair with my favourite Bluetooth headset, a Sennheiser set. But with a no-name set, it produced very good sound.

    The X5 Pro is a 5G phone but I did not bother to test out the offerings of any of the three 5G providers in Australia, though I have always done so in the past. The reason is that 5G plans are not affordable at the moment and with a very good 4G service in Australia, one really doesn't need them.

    Many of the downsides that I experienced with the Pro are due to the presence of Android 12. [I have been using an Oppo A91, with Android 10 and then 11, since May 2020.] Google appears not to have any limits when it comes to slurping up data to drive its advertising business, its main money spinner, and at times, this does get a bit on the nerves.

    But then, Oppo has little choice, I guess, given that it has now invested a lot in trying to create its own fork of Android. The smartphone market is a two-horse affair, where one cannot ride the second one.

    The Pro has a big battery, 5000mAh, and it is fairly easy to reach the end of a day of use with about 15% charge still remaining. This is another aspect in which it outdoes both Samsung and Apple.

    But Oppo is still learning and there are some basic errors: under the Bluetooth Advanced settings, the word display is misspelled: Dsplay Codec Standard. I have never found that kind of error on any phone to date.

    The device, which was released in Australia in April, is currently being sold by Telstra (black model only), Vodafone, Optus (black model only), JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Wireless1, Woolworths Mobile, Catch, Kogan, TeleChoice, Amazon, MobileCiti, Bing Lee and Australia Post.

    The Find X5 Pro comes in two colours: Glaze Black and Ceramic White.

  • US SEC opens probe into Ericsson's alleged bribery in Iraq

    Swedish telecommunications equipment company Ericsson says it has been notified by the US Securities and Exchange Commission that an investigation has been opened into the company's report about its 2019 dealings in Iraq.

    In a statement issued on Thursday, Ericsson said, while it was too early to predict the outcome of the investigation, it was fully co-operating with the SEC.

    The firm is facing a class action lawsuit in the US over the same issue. Chief executive Börje Ekholm and chief financial officer Carl Mellander have been named as defendants in the suit which was filed on 4 March.

    Details of alleged bribery in Ericsson's dealings in Iraq were leaked to the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists which shared the data with The Guardian, the BBC and the Washington Post in March.

    {loadposition sam08}The firm was said to have allegedly paid bribes to the Islamic State terrorist group in order to continue doing business in the country.

    Around the time when Ericsson held its annual general meeting in March, Ekholm claimed he had told staff to hand over the full report on dealings in Iraq to the US Department of Justice.

    This claim was made after the company admitted it had not met the terms of a deal struck with the DoJ in 2019 over claims of alleged corrupt dealings in Iraq.

    It said it had been informed by the DoJ on 1 March that disclosure it had made prior to a deferred prosecution agreement, which was inked on 6 December 2019, was insufficient.

    Ericsson is one of four companies that can provide end-to-end 5G services, the others being Nokia, Huawei and ZTE.

    The latter two forms are Chinese and have been banned from providing equipment in many countries, with the US having led the charge to achieve this.

  • OPPO launches Reno model in Australia after more than a year

    Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO has released a model in its Reno line in Australia after more than a year, putting the Reno8 Lite 5G on sale from Thursday for $599.

    The last time a Reno model was released in Australia was in September 2020, when the Reno4 5G and Reno4 Z 5G were launched.

    The Reno8 Lite 5G is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 695 5G SoC which is built on a 6nm process. It has 6GB of memory and 128GB of storage space.

    The device is claimed to offer features that support professional portrait photography, with a a 64MP hi-res main camera, a 2MP macro camera, a 2MP depth camera, and a 16MP front camera.

    {loadposition sam08}Two of the features on offer are Bokeh Flare Portrait and Selfie HDR. The former allows users to capture portrait images with rich bokeh light spots just like a high-end DSLR camera.

    Selfie HDR captures clear selfies in dimly lit or backlit surroundings. The front camera is claimed to automatically detect background light and use an algorithm to suppress bright light when a backlit face or a bright background is detected, ensuring both subject and background are captured in detail.

    The Reno8 Lite 5G has a 6.4-inch AMOLED display with a 60Hz refresh rate. The display is certified for Netflix HD and Amazon Prime Video HD.

    The device marks the debut of OPPO’s Dual Orbit Lights, which are placed behind the two primary cameras.

    According to OPPO, "The Dual Orbit Lights light up or blink in electric blue, light blue, cyan blue or baby blue depending on different scenarios, for example when the phone is powering on, charging, receiving an incoming call or unread notification, as well as launching a game."

    Australian retailers JB Hi-Fi, Officeworks, Harvey Norman, Big W, Woolworths, Bing Lee, and Australia Post will sell the device which will come in two colours: Rainbow Spectrum and Cosmic Black.

  • Blair Fox goes live with 5G-ready connectivity for wind farms
    in 5G

    West Australian energy company Blair Fox has partnered with IoT tech company M2M Connectivity to upgrade its wireless communications infrastructure, aiding the delivery of renewable energy to farms and agricultural businesses.

    Blair Fox imports and rejuvenates wind turbines and builds wind farms to provide renewable power in remote locations, and the communications upgrade supports continued growth by allowing remote wind farms to be monitored to maintain turbine performance. These turbines are deployed in isolated environments and the M2M-designed IoT solution enables legacy SCADA communication systems in older turbines to operate over 4G and 5G.

    Blair Fox was established in 1997 and now operates 40 wind turbines. Its central operations centre is based in Perth.

    Blair Fox director Tim Rosser said, “Faced with the shutdown of 3G and an aging communications infrastructure, we needed a solution to power remote operations, now and into the future. We had previously relied on manual monitoring and maintenance, but as a small company, this was not sustainable or viable given the remote and rugged locations of our turbines."

    The M2M solution features Sierra Wireless FX30 modems and specialist M2M SIMs at each site.

    M2M Connectivity designed and deployed a custom solution within weeks and what we now have is the peace of mind we need to run our turbines and deliver energy to our customers for years to come,” Rosser said.

    The M2M Connectivity solution emulates CSD over IP allowing legacy systems to communicate seamlessly over 4 and 5G. Using the solution, Blair Fox can now reset and recalibrate each turbine remotely.
