Mesh networking is becoming an increasingly popular way of providing a strong Wi-Fi signal throughout larger homes, but gardens and outbuildings such as sheds and garages can still present problems.
So Netgear has released the $549 Orbi Outdoor Satellite, a weatherproof add-on to its Orbi and Orbi Pro tri-band Wi-Fi systems.
An IP 56 rating means it can keep out any dust that would prevent ongoing use, as well as being waterproof against even powerful jets. So it shouldn't matter if it rains or if you get a bit careless with the garden hose, but you shouldn't expect it to survive being dunked in a water feature or pool.
The Orbi Outdoor Satellite can be connected to an existing Orbi network in a matter of minutes, according to Netgear, and can either be mounted on a wall or left free standing.
The advantages of the Orbi system include a single SSID for the entire network, claimed seamless and automatic roaming as devices move around, and a dedicated 1.7Gbps 5GHz connection between the satellites and the Orbi router for better performance.
Orbi Outdoor Satellite can also be used as an outdoor range extender with any current Wi-Fi router.
"Australians want seamless Wi-Fi, whenever and wherever they need it, no matter whether it's inside or outside the home. It is frustrating to go into the garage or the backyard and to have your Wi-Fi connection drop," said Netgear senior vice-president of connected home, David Henry.
"By adding the Orbi Outdoor Satellite to your Orbi Wi-Fi System, you'll enlarge your Wi-Fi coverage to reach the farthest corners of your property, enabling endless hours of outdoor entertainment.
"So now, whether you're tuning into the Boxing Day test outside on your phone, ushering in the New Year with the latest tracks from Spotify under the verandah, or just enjoying the warmer nights outside with some ambient mood lighting, Orbi Outdoor has you covered."
