VIDEO: Virgin Mobile holds ‘world-first’ data auction for most post-paid Aussie telco customers

If you’re a Virgin Mobile postpaid customer WITHOUT data rollover activated, or most post-paid customers of Aussie telcos (again without data rollover), Virgin Mobile has a stunning auction stunt that comes with attention grabbing pop!

Claiming to be holding a ‘world-first' data auction, Virgin Mobile says that ‘bidding is open to any Aussie telco customer on a Postpaid mobile plan without Data Rollover.’

So, instead of seeing that unused data go to waste, Virgin Mobile wants you to use it ‘as currency’ in its ‘online auction to bid for real items and experiences.’

The auction will run from 15 April to 15 May 2016 through the Virgin Mobile Facebook page, with a new item offered each day.

Bidding will be open from 7pm - 8pm AEST and as with any auction, first in with the highest eligible bid wins.

Virgin Mobile says that ‘with everything from a year's supply of chocolate pretzels to a week’s stay on your own private island up for grabs, this auction is our way of turning the biggest data losers with other telcos into the biggest winners with us.’

What is the data auction?

Virgin Mobile is holding the world's first auction powered by people's unused mobile data.

We're inviting Aussie telco customers on a Postpaid mobile plan without Data Rollover, to avoid wasting their unused data at the end of the month, and instead use it as currency in this online auction to bid for prizes.

The auction will run from 15 April to 15 May 2016 through the Virgin Mobile Facebook page, with a new prize offered each day. How do I place a bid?
To place a bid, all you need to do is wait until the auction opens for the day, then add your 'bid' as a comment in the Facebook auction post.

Your comment should include the amount of unused data you have left over in your most recent month with your current mobile provider. The winner must then reply to our private Facebook message promptly to verify their bid by showing unused data for a billing cycle ending in April or May 2016.

How do I provide proof of my unused data - what methods of proof are acceptable?

To enter you'll need to keep evidence to support your ‘bid' of unused data. We'll be in touch with winners by private Facebook message with details of what they'll need to provide but at least take a screenshot showing your unused data at the end of your billing cycle and keep copies of your bills with your current mobile provider. The unused data must be from a billing a cycle ending in April or May 2016.

Please don't share personal details such as your address or phone number on Facebook.

How is the winner chosen?

The winner will be the first person who comments on the auction post with the highest amount of data, during the time the auction is open that day. They must then reply to our private Facebook message promptly to verify their bid by showing unused data for a billing cycle ending in April or May 2016.

What prizes are on offer?

A range of exciting prizes will be on offer during the auction. Stay tuned for updates - we can tell you that the prizes will all be red hot and remarkable just like Virgin Mobile!

We're also excited to have a very special prize at the end of the month - the chance to bid for a week's stay on your own private island, just like our own Sir Richard Branson.

Who can enter?

Any customer on a Postpaid mobile plan without Data Rollover that lives in Oz, is over 18 and isn't staff or their family (drat… we'd love to enter this too if we could) can enter - we want to put your unused data to good use rather than see it go to waste!

Do I need to be a Virgin Mobile customer?

Not at all - we're inviting mobile customers with any telco the opportunity to use their unused data to bid in our auction and let Virgin Mobile make them the biggest winners, rather than data losers each month.

What happens if I place my bid at the same time as someone else for the same amount?

The Virgin Mobile Data Auction will be hosted through our Facebook page so each comment, and therefore bid will be time stamped by the platform - allowing us to fairly see who hit the send button on their bid first.

How do I claim my prize?

If you're a lucky winner we'll be in touch shortly after the Data Auction finishes. The winner must reply to our private Facebook message promptly to verify their bid by showing unused data for a billing cycle ending in April or May 2016.

How long does the competition run for?

The Virgin Mobile Data Auction will be live from 15 April until 15 May 2016, with one auction running each day between 7pm and 8pm AEST.
