VIDEO Interview: Chris Althaus on 16 years service as AMTA CEO, plus 5G, the industry and more! Featured

By

Chris Althaus is CEO of AMTA, the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, and before he steps down in early 2021 after over a decade and a half of service to the Australian telco industry and Australia consumers, he joined us for a chat about the industry's past, present and future, as well as his own.

Chris Althaus. Since January 2006, he has been the head of AMTA, the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association, and in his time, has seen the 3G, 4G and now 5G revolutions, and has seen the birth of the modern smartphone, the tablet, the Internet of Things and so much more.

In late November 2020, Althaus announced his intention to step down as CEO in early 2021, which iTWire reported on here.

However, Chris has been very busy in the last couple of weeks, producing an excellent range of very timely, must-read content that is definitely worth sharing with friends, colleagues and family.

iTWire and CommsWire exclusively published Althaus' article entitled: "5G to transform the 'new normal' post COVID-19".

We also published "AMTA'S top five holiday safety messages for phone ownership and use" as well as "AMTA's five key suggestions for parents to consider when buying their child their first mobile phone", alongside AMTA's "Buying a new mobile device this Christmas? Here are AMTA's top tips!" advice.

AMTA also welcomed Federal Communications Minister Paul Fletcher's "5G in 2021" statement in early November.

iTWire and CommsWire have invited Chris to share any views on the industry in the future, should he wish to share his thoughts given the incredible insights he has gained and shared over the past decade and a half - no doubt Chris will still have many great contributions to make, and should he wish to have them published, we would love to do so - but that's up to Chris! :-)

We'd also love to talk to Chris before his tenure at AMTA officially ends, and we hope to do that in early 2021.

First, however, we greatly appreciate the time Chris took to sit down with iTWire and CommsWire, and we present that video interview to you below, followed by a summary of the questions and topics we spoke about.

I started by introducing Chris and welcoming him to the program, followed by asking him about the incredible advances and changes he has seen over the past 16 years, with 3G, 4G, 5G, smartphones, tablets, the ubiquity and speed of modern mobile broadband and so much more, as well as asking Chris what was THE most amazing development he has seen during this time.

We spoke about Telstra, 5G phones and devices, and Chris' article on 5G and what that article focused on, which you can read above.

We also spoke about 6G and what Chris expects the coming 6G revolution, in about a decade's time, to deliver.

I then asked Chris, with a smile on my face, the important question - was he an iPhone or Android person, and who his current fixed broadband provider was.

I asked Chris what he'd be doing once he left the AMTA CEO post - would he take some time off, enjoy retirement or did he have a new position already lined up?

Then I finished with my usual three questions - what the industry might look like in 2030, great advice Chris had received in life to help him get where he is today, and his final message to iTWire and CommsWire viewers and readers, to the industry and to his colleagues.

So, please watch the video interview above, and a very big thanks to Chris for taking the time to sit with us and share his views, knowledge and experience!
