Tata says platform opens NBN to more telcos Featured

By

Global ICT services company Tata Consultancy Services has launched a new technology platform it claims will open up the National Broadband Network to more competition from more retail telcos.

According to TCS, the Australia-specific version of HOBS — its proprietary, cloud-based Hosted OSS/BSS System — simplifies the ability of smaller and mid-tier players to connect to the network.

TCS says the system is designed to help telcos migrate their customers onto the NBN, activate them and manage services such as billing, sales and customer care.

Stephen Argyropoulos, TCS’s head of telecoms and media in Australia, said a major advantage of the new product was that it eliminates the need for telcos to have to build their own, often-expensive back-end IT systems.

“Fostering greater competition among telcos has always been a long-term aim of the NBN.

“Simply put, HOBS reduces the time and effort it takes for a retail telco to onboard customers onto the NBN. That’s good news for retail telcos. And more competition from more telcos has to be great news for consumers.”

Argyropoulos says iterations of the HOBS product are already being used by some of the world’s biggest telcos and broadcasters, including BT, AT&T and Comcast.

“What makes this new product different is that it has been designed specifically to enable Australian retail telcos to integrate into the NBN.

“We’ve carried out end-to-end testing with NBN Co to make sure that the product is fully compatible with the National Broadband Network from a technical perspective.”
