AMTA welcomes Comms Minister Paul Fletcher's 5G in 2021 statement

By

As reported earlier by iTWire, Australia's Federal Communications Minister, Paul Fletcher, has said 2021 will be "the year of 5G" with the first allocation of mmWave 26Ghz 5G due in April to complement already available 5G services from Telstra, Optus and Vodafone.

Colleague Sam Varghese has already covered Minister Fletcher's announcement that 2021 will be the year of 5G in Australia, which also includes low-band 5G spectrum in the 850/900MHz band to be allocated in "the second half of the year".

Now comes a statement from Chris Althaus, the CEO of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA).

Althaus said: “The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (AMTA) welcomes today's announcement by the Minister for Communications - The Hon Paul Fletcher MP regarding planned allocation of 5G spectrum in the 26 GHz and 850/900 MHz bands in 2021.

“As we continue to navigate through COVID-19 and look for every opportunity to focus on economic recovery, this spectrum release will be critical to further enabling enhanced 5G mobile connectivity and productivity which will in turn help drive the economy and foster better-connected communications for communities.”

“AMTA welcomes this commitment to 5G spectrum by the Morrison Government and agrees that getting the right spectrum to market across high, mid and low bands is a critical - but only one part of the success story for 5G.

"Spectrum and mobile network deployment are the two sides of the mobile infrastructure coin, spectrum needs a network and networks need spectrum - both are essential to enable 5G. So, in addition to this important 5G spectrum agenda - it is crucial that network deployment regulatory reform continues to ensure Australia’s mobile network operators can deliver a smooth roll out of 5G.

“As we look to 2021 as the Year of 5G, AMTA looks forward to working with the Government on a clear path for improving network deployment regulation in partnership with allocation of spectrum to ensure Australia remains a world leader in 5G,” Althaus concluded.
