The first in a three part discussion on Australia's cybersecurity legislation covering changes to critical infrastructure laws, surveillance laws and mandatory data retention laws has been published by Peter Coroneos, the International Vice President of CyAN, the Cybersecurity Advisors Network.

With changes to Australia's cybersecurity laws are underway, CyAN's Vice President, Peter Coroneos spoke with Professor Patrick Fair, an experienced cyber legal and regulatory expert, on three major reforms which will have a significant bearing on industry and will be closely watched internationally.

In Part 1, which is embedded below and can also be seen here at LinkedIn, both men talk about the new requirements for owners of critical infrastructure. Part two discusses Australian surveillance laws, with part three where Peter Coroneos and Patrick Fair talk about Australia's mandatory data retention laws, here. All three videos are a "must-watch" for anyone working in the cyber area.

As Peter Coroneos notes, this is a must-watch video for anyone working in the cyber area, with both Peter and Patrick Fair sharing invaluable insights. iTWire will publish parts 2 and 3 when they become avaiable.

Peter also points to Patrick's freely downloadable 2021 Quick Start: Australian Cyber Security policy Guide (PDF link).

Patrick Fair states "this update provides an overview of the status of key issues in Australian Cyber Security Policy at the start of 2021.

"The list of current issues is extensive. Changes to foreign investment review became law on 1 January 2021. A exposure draft of a new Online Safety Act was published in December.

"Also in December 2020, consultations were opened on powers to "identify and disrupt" electronic services with a view to frustrating the commission of offences and the role of social media and encryption in support of extreme and radical movements.

"A number of important review are current or awaiting response, including in relation to Critical infrastructure, the Privacy Act, Telecommunications security Sector Reform, mandatory data retention, the Telecommunications and other Legislation (Assistance and Access) Act and Australia's implementation of the cooperation with the USA under the US Cloud Act."
