Unisys Earns a Perfect Score on 2021 Disability Equality Index

Company recognized as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion”

COMPANY NEWS:  Unisys is proud to report that its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) has been recognized with a perfect score in the 2021 Disability Equality Index®. The score of 100% signifies Unisys as a “Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion.”

The Disability Equality Index is a joint initiative of Disability:IN and the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). The Index is the world’s most comprehensive benchmarking tool to measure disability workplace inclusion, and is designed to help companies build a roadmap of measurable, tangible actions to help reinforce their commitment to DEI.

Maria Sitaramayya, Vice President, Human Resources, Asia Pacific says, “Real inclusion means that disabilities are treated as normal, not an exception. Rather than count and track people with a ‘disability’, at Unisys we focus on creating ability to ensure inclusion across all parts of our operations.”

“One individual’s needs will be different to another’s, and a disability is just one factor in the mix when developing a work environment that enables everyone to perform their best and contribute to the company’s achievements. It can be as simple as allocating a car space close to lift or a standing desk. But while flexible hours or remote working might be useful for someone who is not very mobile – these options also allow employees to care for children and elders, work across multiple time zones or simply avoid a commute, so it is just part of our ‘normal’ approach to inclusion and helping our people be productive.

Recent efforts made by Unisys to implement a diversity supported workplace include: 

  • Founding of a disability employee resource group 
  • Optional disability inclusion training 
  • Zoom closed-captioning 
  • especially measuring engagement of employees with disability as part of the annual engagement survey process 
  • New health insurance benefits including hearing aid coverage.  

“Importantly, we also actively create a culture of understanding and inclusion across our entire workforce including training to avoid unconscious bias. We are proud to have provided the IT support the Invictus Games Sydney 2018, an event that inspires recovery, supports rehabilitation, and generates a wider understanding and respect for wounded, injured and sick service personnel – this event embodied the concept of focusing on ability, mirroring our own values,” says Maria.

Working aged people with disabilities are twice as likely to be unemployed than those without a disability. Faced with access barriers, discrimination, workplace bullying, and social misconceptions, professionals with disabilities are not receiving the same opportunities as those without.  

By implementing a Diversity Equality Index (DEI) within the workplace, companies are able to eliminate institutionalized discrimination and incorporate support strategies to advance the inclusion of people with disabilities.  Unisys is proud to be championing a culture of inclusivity from all perspectives and people as the new standard for businesses across the world.
