Apple announces adaptor recycling program Featured

By

Apple today announced a power adaptor recycling program following a spate of reported iPhone electrocutions.

As we reported last month a 30 year old Chinese man was left in a coma and a 23 year old air hostess was killed, reportedly as a result from faulty third-party iPhone chargers.

Apple has swiftly responded, agreeing to take back third-party USB power adaptors and "dispose of them in an environmentally friendly way", replacing them with official Apple products at a discounted rate starting from 16 August.

“Recent reports have suggested that some counterfeit and third-party adaptors may not be designed properly and could result in safety issues. While not all third party adaptors have an issue, we are announcing a USB Power Adaptor Takeback Program to enable customers to acquire properly designed adaptors,” said Apple today in a statement.

The company said that replacement adapters will be available to buy at the discounted price of US$10 or the equivalent in the local currency, and the deal will last until 1 October 2013 and, to qualify, prospective purchasers will need to turn in at least one USB power adaptor. They will also need to show an iDevice (iPhone, iPad or iPod) for serial number validation.

“Customer safety is a top priority at Apple. That’s why all of our products – including USB power adapters for iPhone, iPad and iPod – undergo rigorous testing for safety and reliability and are designed to meet government safety standards around the world,” said Apple.
