The Database Is No Longer Slow With SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer

REVIEW PROMOTION: Imagine spending all day tuning a database query only to find performance problems are external to the database. If you’ve been there, then SolarWinds Database Performance Analyzer (DPA) is here to help.

SolarWinds® Database Performance Analyzer (DPA) is a multi-platform product supporting Windows®, Linux® and SQL, Oracle®, DB2®, Sybase®, MySQL®, PostgreSQL®, Amazon® RDS, Amazon Aurora®, and Azure® SQL. There’s no need to run 17 different tools for 17 different platforms when you can have your database and operating system combinations catered for in one app, especially one speaking the language of both on-premises and cloud-based database products.

It’s a typical story; the application is slow and long-running database queries are suspected to be the cause. The database administrator runs through the usual checklist—indexing strategies, caching, splitting files over multiple disks—but there’s special pain in debugging issues only to find the problem lies somewhere else. Perhaps the virtual environment is struggling under the load of a noisy neighbour virtual machine, or the physical hypervisor is over-provisioned for the CPU, disk, or RAM. Spread this problem over the highly scalable and vast infrastructure we have today, and it’s clear the sheer amount of time that could be saved with a great tool to home in and pinpoint what’s going on.

SolarWinds DPA doesn’t simply lift the veil but tears it right down. DPA will bring performance metrics out of vSphere, displaying them side by side with queries and infrastructure counters. You’ll see if the host is overcommitted in CPU or if your hypervisor is experiencing SAN delays.

With its wide DBMS support and rich environmental connectivity, DPA gives serious insights and grunt to analyzing and optimizing issues affecting your database performance no matter where the issue lies.

The interface is clear and intuitive, and both real-time and historical data is available down to the second.

DPA remotely connects to each database instance using Java Database Connectivity (JDBC), with no software installations on the monitored server. In a virtual environment, DPA can remotely connect to each VMware® vCenter Server, ESX®, or ESXi host and similarly doesn’t install any software on these hosts or virtual machines. DPA executes a query on monitored database instances to collect information about wait events, once per second and creates less than 1% overhead on each monitored instance and server.

dpa optimize performance

The platform analyzes the metrics it gathers for immediate insights, and also employs machine-learning-driven anomaly detection to go beyond and proactively identify pitfalls, problems, and matters of potential concern before they become more serious.

DPA is the tool to solve your database problems and, in fact, it’s a tool designed to go beyond the database team. Nothing exists in a vacuum. Inefficiencies and issues at the database level also affect network traffic, server resource consumption, application performance, storage throughput, and many other things in your data centre.

DPA eradicates any doubt as to whether a database-impacting event requires the DBA, the network administrator, the systems administrator, or any other member of the team to begin solving an issue. DPA aids in identifying and dealing with performance problems before your customers, users, or CEO ask what’s going on.

There’s rarely a substantial business application which doesn’t rely heavily on a database, and DPA can be the difference between customers leaving your site for a competitor, or in giving your colleagues across the business the query results they need to make the next big sale.

DPA offers a free trial so you can test it out without any obligation or risk. Pricing varies based on perpetual or subscription licensing, and you can request a quote online. Upcoming features are also detailed online.
