APIs for the Smart Telco

Application programming interfaces (APIs) are driving efficiencies and building smarter cities. In the increasingly competitive telco space, API adoption is fundamental for providers to adapt to technological change. APIs in telco can simplify and speed up the process of service delivery while cutting development costs.

Retail service providers have always wanted APIs, so why is it still not common in the telco market? The answer is simple. Incumbent telcos were reluctant to give end-users too much control, which meant a lot of manual work was needed. Symbio Networks, operator of Australia’s largest IP voice network, was an early adopter of APIs in the telco space. It places control in the retail service providers’ hands by delivering the tools to increase operational capacity and provide services efficiency.

What makes APIs smart?

When thinking about smart devices like smart phones, smart watches or smart cars, what do they all have in common? Connectivity, enablement and control. API is a smart software that allows platforms to talk to platforms with little to no human involvement. The API itself is an enabler, it provides connectivity for networks to communicate via a set of commands. It allows the retail service providers management control and easy access to the resources they need. APIs enable providers to plug-in self-service functionality into their own portals, eliminating the need for a middle-man. This means that handling and raising customer orders or requests into wholesale systems is automated.

Why do we need APIs?

APIs can increase agility and efficiency, making it a necessity to remain competitive in the growing technological market. Delivery processes that could take weeks to complete can be reduced to a day. An analysis on the value of APIs by McKinsey has estimated that up to $1 trillion total economic profit could be saved worldwide through redistribution of resources across the ecosystems. The significance of APIs is evident.

How does Symbio create efficiencies with APIs?

Symbio empowers retail service providers with a smart voice network driven by software and APIs. By using APIs, providers can integrate their back-office systems to easily order and manage services. Symbio API helps create efficiencies for wholesale customers in 3 ways:

1. Number Porting

Enabling customers to keep their phone numbers when moving to a new service provider is key to overcoming big switching barrier. The Symbio number porting API provides service qualification, real-time carrier access, progress updates and automates the entire porting process for simple number migrations.

2.  Pre-select and Override orders

Pre-select and override options give service providers and their end-users more options on how they want to route their calls. Symbio manages all interactions with pre-select orders, while override orders can be dialed by the end-user or automated on their phone system. The API enables providers to check the order status of these orders in their own back-office system.

3. Number Management

Providers can have complete control in ordering and managing their customer’s numbers. The functions of the number management API by Symbio include searching, leasing and listing numbers. As well as assigning, updating and removing numbers on their customer’s account.

Competition is growing in the telco space due to technological change, it is time for retail service providers to take charge. Symbio provides the building blocks to create great services by placing control in service providers’ hands.
