Hunter Biden, the son of US President Joe Biden, has admitted that a laptop, which he is alleged to have left at a repair shop in Delaware and the contents of which led to controversy in the run-up to last year's presidential election, could be his.

But most US reports about the interview focused instead on other aspects, such as his drug use.

An article in the New York Post, on 14 October 2020, headlined Smoking-gun email reveals how Hunter Biden introduced Ukrainian businessman to VP dad, could not be posted on Twitter while Facebook placed restrictions on the distribution of the story.

The curbs led to an almighty uproar, with claims that the two technology companies were trying to prevent negative coverage of the older Biden, with the presidential election barely a month away.

The contents of the laptop included emails that were at the centre of the Post series, which focused on Hunter's business dealings in Ukraine and elsewhere.

A day after it blocked the article, which contained some damaging allegations about the older Biden too, Twitter suffered an outage.

Numerous emails from Hunter were published as part of the article, and their veracity was not questioned.

Twitter refused to allow the article to be posted and blocked anyone who tried to do so.

Apart from the emails, the article contained photographs and a video of a drug-fuelled sexual escapade.

One email said the older Biden had met a top executive at the Ukrainian firm Burisma at his son's urging. The older Biden has stated in the past that he has not spoken to his son about his overseas business dealings.

During an interview on the CBS Sunday program, to promote a book written by him and being published by a CBS affiliate, Hunter first said, "I really don't know", when asked by interviewer Tracy Smith whether the laptop was his.

But when he was pressed as to whether the device belonged to him, he said: “Of course certainly … There could be a laptop out there that was stolen from me.

"It could be that I was hacked. It could be that it was the– that it was Russian intelligence. It could be that it was stolen from me. Or that there was a laptop stolen from me.”

Prominent American journalist Glenn Greenwald told the Fox News show MediaBuzz on Sunday: "We should be revisiting it [the laptop story] regardless because the real story was not just what those documents showed about Biden and China and Ukraine, but also the abuse of power by Facebook and the Democrats to censor a major story right before an election. It was incredible interference and manipulation from the right to vote and the right to be heard."

Comedian Jimmy Dore, who comments frequently on US political developments, put out a video focusing on Hunter's admission.
