Spoilerwall: a 'new concept' in network hardening

By

A playful developer has written what he/she calls a "new concept of network hardening": displaying spoilers whenever someone conducts a port scan of a Linux/UNIX server.

Spoilerwall is a Python script and can be downloaded from GitHub.

Installation is trivial and is detailed here. A live demo can be seen here.

"Firewall? How about Fire'em'all! Stop spending thousands of dollars on big teams that you don't need! Just fire up the Spoilers Server and that's it!" the developer writes.

The configuration steps detailed allow one to show every port as being open and a spoiler for each one whenever one uses the well-known application nmap to conduct a port scan.

Such scans are something which attackers carry out to ascertain what application they should use to attack a given server.

A sample scan is provided using the Shodan search engine.

The developer adds a playful warning, "Be careful in your next CTF (capture the flag) – you never know when the spoilers are coming!"
