Taiwanese original design manufacturer Compal Electronics has suffered a cyber intrusion, with the attackers using the Windows DoppelPaymer ransomware to infiltrate the company's systems in an attack that was reported over the weekend.
Compal is the second biggest contract laptop manufacturer and has contracts with companies like Apple, Acer, Lenovo. Dell, Toshiba, Hewlett-Packard and Fujitsu.
It had revenue of US$27 billion in 2017, according to Wikipedia, and has offices in China, South Korea, the Uk and the US.
The Taiwanese business news website UDN quoted Lu Qingxiong, a spokesperson for Compal, as saying that the main systems to suffer due to the attack were those that controlled office automation.
It said Compal had notified suppliers that internal systems had taken a hit and this would affect some projects in the short term.
Lu also said that most of the damage had been fixed and normal business was expected to resume on Tuesday.
The gang behind DoppelPaymer have yet to list the Compal attack on their dark web site, indicating that they are waiting for the company to respond to the ransom note that would have been generated after encryption of files occurred.
iTWire has contacted Compal for comment.
