Palo Alto welcomes Government ransomware crackdown

By

The Federal Government today announced a major multi-agency operation to combat cyber attacks on Australian entities. Palo Alto networks says this is welcomed and focuses on important key themes.

The new multi-agency operation is led by the Australian Federal Police. In 2020 Australia saw a 60% rise in cyber attacks, with an economic cost of $1.4 billion.

The government-wide push aims to curb cyber crime from online hackers who encrypt and steal sensitive data and demand a ransom for its return.

Sarah Sloan, head of government affairs and public policy ANZ, Palo Alto Networks said, "Palo Alto Networks supports the Australian Government’s efforts to combat the threat of ransomware – which has grown from a cyber crime nuisance to a critical risk to national and global security, economic stability, and public safety."

"We welcome the Ransomware Action Plan’s focus on measures across key themes of Prepare and Prevent; Respond and Recover; Disrupt and Deter," Sloan said.

"It is important that national policies pursue a multi-pronged approach to combat ransomware, which is focused on helping organisations not just respond to ransomware attacks but also help them better prepare for and prevent these attacks. We look forward to working with the Australian Government on implementing some of the measures outlined in the Ransomware Action Plan."
