Akamai releases software for vaccination registration websites

Global content delivery network Akamai has released software for running vaccination registration websites, with Vaccine Edge claimed to provide the needed delivery, security and waiting room logic.

The software has been developed at a time when a number of countries, Australia included, are launching vaccination campaigns against COVID-19.

The company said in a statement the waiting room was a key feature to ensure that visitors would remain on the site.

"When a visitor navigates to the website, Vaccine Edge will determine if they need to go to the virtual waiting room based on your configurations," the company said, describing the front-end of the site.
"In that waiting room, the visitor sees a personalised page with their place in the queue, estimated wait time, and more.

"When their turn comes up, they’ll automatically be redirected to the right place."

The back-end has controls to avoid the site being overloaded by traffic.

Vaccine Edge has a Web application firewall that automates and updates protections and protects against DDoS attacks.

The software includes a TLS certificate and uses Akamai's CDN to offload cached content and speed up non-cacheable requests.
