Review: Vid2pix for Windows Phone 8.1

By

Every now and then an app comes along which is so simple yet clever you wonder why you weren't already using it. Vid2Pix for Windows Phone 8.1 is such an app.

How many times have you taken video footage then thought "that's a good shot" of yourself, your cat, your friend, a scene ... something? In the past, if you wanted to extract a still image from a video file you would typically upload it to your computer, play the video trying hard to stop on the right spot, then use print screen or a snipping tool to capture the perfect photo. While the process worked, it has some labour involved.

In today's world with the rise of the "selfie" perhaps the photo you want isn't of something else but yourself - whether from your own video, or from a friend's footage they have shared with you. Getting that great photo of yourself from the video still involved the same effort.

Here's where vid2pix comes in, for Windows Phone 8.1 users. You may download this app for free from the Windows Phone store, from developer Reality Enhanced. The app contains in-app advertising but this does not diminish the functionality. A once-off fee can be optionally paid via in-app purchase to support the developer and remove the advertising.

Once you have the app installed, usage could not be simpler. The app does one thing, and does it well, and that is - as its name suggests - to get that perfect photo from video to picture.

Within the app, open the video file from your camera roll. Slide through the video with precise tracking controls to the frame you like, click the on-screen camera button, and the frame is captured as a photograph and stored back in your camera roll.

From within the app you can share the photo on your favourite social media sites, or you can use any other means too - the fact the photo is saved to your camera roll means you aren't locked in, in any way, to the app.

Vid2pix promises to help you have no more lost moments - it's a lofty promise, but the app definitely helps. It can transform how you take photographs of memorable scenes. Instead of trying to snap at the right time, you can film the moment and later review for the best moments.

It can also help you find that elusive perfect selfie, capturing it from video, as well as your special moments with loved ones.

With a price tag of free it simply makes sense to include vid2pix in your Windows Phone arsenal of apps.
