The OPPO A76 is the latest 4G model from the well-known Chinese company and it has a few noticeable features compared to earlier devices released in Australia.
This country is not a primary target for OPPO, that much is clear. Australia is known as Apple country and if OPPO wants to compete, then it needs to bring its OnePlus brand here. Exactly what marketing strategy is being followed is unclear, but the latest OnePlus, the 10Pro, was recently released in the US, after initial launch in China.
Last year, B.B.K. Electronics announced it was merging development of the OPPO and OnePlus brands; until then, OnePlus was a separate company. It is now under the BBK umbrella as are its other brands: vivo, realme and iQoo, the last-named focusing on India. That joint development has now been cancelled.
The plastic phone cover is a shade of grey which gives it a better look – cosmetic change, sure, but then given that one Android device in this range is very much like its neighbour, these little touches do count.
Close-up photos are a strong point for this device.
For the first time I can recall, OPPO has not provided a set of earphones with an A-series device. One could mount an argument that it is high time for all smartphone users to have a set of their own; one could also whinge about the lack of the phones.
The charging process on the A76 is faster, with 33W SUPERVOOC fast charging technology introduced for the first time in an A-series model; a big battery, 5000mAh, is also a welcome feature. I had to charge the device just once during my testing.
The A76 has a 6.56-inch HD display with a 89.9% screen-to-body ratio. A 90Hz refresh rate is available, in addition to the standard 60Hz. This is a plus, even if it means that more frequent charging is needed.
This device is a 4G model and, again, that is a good thing. I, for one, am sick to the gills of the 5G hype that we've been subjected to in Australia; all it means is paying out more to either Telstra or Optus.
It will take at least a couple of years more before one needs to consider a 5G phone, unless it becomes unavoidable because there are no 4G devices in the market.
The A76 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC, which provides enough grunt for gaming and multimedia performance. However, the fact there is 4GB of memory does tend to hit performance a bit.
On the plus side, there is microSD storage expansion up to 1TB. It supports the RAM Expansion feature, which is claimed to help alleviate performance bottlenecks for memory-limited devices, but then this is really no replacement for real RAM. I note that the overseas model has 6GB RAM and wonder why the model released here could not have the same amount of memory.
The A76 has a premium dual camera module layout; an 8MP front-facing camera has a pixel size of 1.12um and an aperture of f2.0, producing decent portraits up to 3264 x 2448.
The company claims that additional features like 360° Fill Light, AI natural retouching, and High Dynamic Range make the photos better. Make your own judgement from the shots included in this article.
The rear dual camera setup has a 13MP f2.2 main sensor on top and a 2MP secondary bokeh camera on the bottom.
Locally, the A76 is available from JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, Wireless1, Woolworths Mobile, Big W, Catch, Kogan, TeleChoice, Amazon, Mobileciti, OPPO online store, and Retravision. There is a free set of OPPO Enco Wireless W12 earphones for all those who buy the device before 30 April.
