The ICT industry was the second strongest contributor to job ad growth across Australia in 2018, with job ads up 12% last year compared to 2017, according to the latest employment report from online jobs board SEEK which also showed that across all industries the average advertised salary was up by 3.9% in 2018.

Healthcare and Medical was the third strongest contributor to the employment market, with job ads up 12% in 2018 when compared to 2017.

SEEK says last year was a strong year for the Australian employment market with new job ads up 8.6% over the 12 months of 2018, and for the three months to December, the national average salary in ICT was $108,000, with 3% national average salary growth.

“It is good news for jobseekers that the 2018 employment market was stronger than the year prior," said Kendra Banks, managing director, SEEK ANZ.

“More encouraging is that growth in the employment market has come from a diverse range of industries. There is demand for candidates that can carry out highly technical roles, to those who can support the frontline service needs of our population such as in healthcare roles.”

Across the board in all industry sectors, SEEK says trades and services contributed to the greatest proportion of national job ad growth for 2018.

And the SEEK study shows new job ad volume in large employing states Victoria up 11%, and New South Wales up 5%, while Tasmania and Western Australia recorded the strongest growth rate in new job ads over 2018.

Compared to 2017, new job ads in Trades and Services were up 14% and double digit year to year growth in the industry was evident across all states except for New South Wales, where the industry job ad volume was only up 5%.

SEEK says nationally Mining, Resource and Energy was the star performing industry over 2018, with new job ads up 32%, the fourth largest contributing industry to overall national job ad growth.

“It is interesting to see in our data indications of changes in the employment market as a result of what we’ve referred to at SEEK as a ‘hollowing out of the middle’ – we see increased demand for highly skilled, technology roles advertised across the ICT classification, along with demand for service sector roles advertised in the Healthcare & Medical classification,” Banks said.

“This reflects the demand for people in our labour market that can 'work on and with technology and AI as well as those roles where technology and AI is less prevalent, such as high-touch variable roles such as nursing and aged care.”
