Du Plessis moves into top job at MaxMine

Mining technology specialist MaxMine has promoted Coert Du Plessis to the role of CEO.

"Our team has really taken to Coert, and we are already seeing value form the early building blocks he created to help us scale," said outgoing MaxMine CEO Tom Cawley.

"He has energised the teams in building a stronger product focused on our customers."

Du Plessis joined MaxMine in May 2020 as COO, following a stint at BHP, where he most recently served as global data strategy lead.

He previously worked as group executive at CFC Group, after spending 17 years at Deloitte, most recently as senior partner in charge of the WA big data analytics and customer practices.

Du Plessis decided to join MaxMine shortly after visiting the company's Adelaide office in December 2019.

He said the three things that convinced him to join the startup were:

"One, the calibre of the existing leadership team and their adaptive business mindset; demonstrated in successfully raising growth capital in a year disrupted by COVID.

"Two, generating industry leading data quality and confidence in their results, an order of magnitude better than incumbent FMS. It means MaxMine users transition from teams arguing about the validity of data to knowing what needs to be done next.

"Three, the ability to over-come digital inertia and drive technology adoption with front line operators and operational leadership teams month in and month out."

He added "It was inspirational to see the speed at which the MaxMine team could develop these incredible technologies and develop the unique delivery approaches whilst maintaining an incredible focus on customer value.

"MaxMine has gone further than any other technology product and service I have come across in solving the challenge of delivering consistent value for mine site operations."

Du Plessis holds a bachelor's degree in accounting and business management from Stellenbosch University (South Africa), and is a chartered accountant. He also serves as data chief of DataAlchemists, "a dedicated community of data scientists solving old business problems through data".

Cawley is moving into the role of executive chair, where he will focus on adjacent business opportunities and other ways to grow the company.
