Debian developer Frans Pop passes away

By

The Debian GNU/Linux Project is in mourning following the untimely death of a senior developer, Frans Pop, who died in the Netherlands on August 20.

A freelance IT consultant, Frans got involved in the Debian project in 2004. In May the following year he became a developer.

Early in 2006, he became the release manager for the Debian Installer project, taking over from veteran Joey Hess.

According to the Debian project, Frans was a maintainer of several packages, a supporter of the S/390 port, and one of the most involved members of the Debian Installer team.

Frans was also Debian Listmaster, editor and release manager of the Installation Guide and the release notes, as well as a Dutch translator.

"The Debian Project honours his good work and strong dedication to Debian and Free Software," a media release said. "Frans' broad technical knowledge and his ability to share that knowledge with others will be missed.

"The contributions of Frans will not be forgotten, and the high standards of his work will continue to serve as an inspiration to others."

He was in his 40s and single at the time of his death.
