Perens joins keynote speakers for LCA 2012

By

One of the first luminaries of the free and open source software world, Bruce Perens, has been announced as the second keynote speaker for the 13th Australian national Linux conference.

LCA 2012 is scheduled to be held in Ballarat from January 16 to 20, the first time the event has moved out of a capital city either in Australia or New Zealand: it has been hosted across the Tasman twice.

Perens was the primary author of the Open Source Definition, which was derived from  the Debian Free Software Guidelines; he was one of the early leaders of the Debian GNU/Linux project.

The Open Source Definition is credited to the Open Source Initiative which Perens and Eric S. Raymond jointly set up in 1998.

Perens will speak on the "Second Revolution of Open Source - Open Hardware".

Prior to his getting involved in free software, Perens spent 20 years in the graphics animation industry, 12 of them at Pixar Animations which was then owned by the late Steve Jobs.

He was vice-president of Sourcelabs from 1995 to 1997, and series editor of the Bruce Perens' Open Source Series of books. Twenty-four books were published in this series by Prentice Hall.

Perens was HP's senior global strategist for GNU/Linux and Open Source. He has also been president of Linux Capital Group, a venture fund that specialised in funding businesses that were based on Linux.

He joins Karen Sandler, head of the GNOME Foundation. on the keynote speakers' list.
