Podcaster gets publishing contract

An author that has been publishing his novels via podcast and recently put his first book out through a small press has been signed by a major publisher.

San Francisco-based Seth Harwood has been podcasting his crime stories Jack Wakes Up, Jack Palms II: This is Life, and Jack Palms III, as well as the short story collection A Long Way From Disney.

Earlier this year, Jack Wakes Up was released as a paperback through Amazon by Breakneck Books, which specialises in action and adventure novels.

This week, Harwood announced that Jack Wakes Up will be republished by Crown/Random House sometime in 2009. While the contract is initially for one book, he sounds optimistic that the rest of the series will follow.

"It's basically the culmination of something I've been working toward for longer than I'd want to tell you," he said.

Harwood's book deal mirrors the success of Scott Sigler, another San Francisco author whose work could be described as horror/action/SF crossover. While his first book, Earthcore, was published by a small press as a paperback, Infected hit the bookstores last month as a Random House hardcover.

Giving away novels as free podcasts before trying to sell the books sounds like a strange business model, but it works by building a fan base that is ready to go out and support the authors in online and real-life bookshops, as well as by word-of-mouth recommendations.
