OVO provokes competitors to win customers with more data and hiked allowances

OVO says it is "doubling down on its capped prepaid mobile data plans, opting to increase the full-speed data allowance on its larger plans as opposed to offering lower-speed unlimited mobile plans".

As media-telco hybrid MVNO OVO continues to "build its audience for unique sports and entertainment content streamed data free on OVOPlay," the company's chief executive, Matt Jones has also called on mobile telcos "to be more transparent in their offerings and stop introducing further confusion for Australian consumers".

He said: "We want more data so we can watch and listen to more content. If the data isn't fast enough to stream with, what good is it? In trying to be first-to-market with an inferior product, all these telcos have done is give people more reasons to distrust them.

"Instead of trying to lock people into long-term contracts on lousy products that look good on a billboard, OVO continues to offer mobile products that actually deliver."

As of this week, OVO said the data caps on its "Medium, Large and Extra Large plans are getting a boost at no extra charge. New customers will automatically receive the upgrade, while existing customers will be able to opt-in for the data hikes on their dashboard on the OVO website or app later this month".

The changes include:

  • OVO Mobile – Medium plan has gone from 5GB to 6GB for $29.95 / 30 days.
  • OVO Mobile – Large plan customers have received a 50% data increase from 10GB to 15GB for $34.95 / 30 days.
  • OVO Mobile – Extra Large data limit has gone from 19GB to 20GB for $49.95 / 30 days.

On top of these new data hikes, OVO said "new customers that sign on before the end of June 2018 can take advantage of OVO's EOFY Sale that offers half-price + bonus data for the first 90 days", including:

  • OVO Mobile – Large plan $34.95 plan including 25GB, at $17.48 for the first three months.
  • OVO Mobile – Extra Large $49.95 including a huge 40GB, $24.98 for the first three months.

We're reminded that "both are promotional plans, therefore offer up to double the data and 50% off for the first three months".

"The latest data hikes on OVO pre-paid mobile plans comes as customers and industry react to the first unlimited mobile plans to be offered to Australian consumers."

According to Jones, while "uncapped data allowances on mobile networks has been a long time coming, it should not be at the expense of quality".

"True unlimited mobile data is on its way, but it's clearly not here yet without having to compromise on what consumers really want, which is speed, reliability and freedom to move without having to worry about how much longer a long-term contract has left to run.

"The best value is still to be found in capped prepaid data plans that don't limit you on speeds, but still give you more than enough data to play with.

"In upping the data allowances on our plans, we've opted for fairness over hype. We know OVO fans choose to stay with us because they get more data when it becomes available, without having to pay extra, and without being locked in to a contract that starts to decrease in value as soon as it's signed."

OVO also wants us to note that "this week's data increases makes OVO's $49.95 Extra-Large 40GB pre-paid mobile double data offer is the best-value offering on the market today, even without taking into account the 90-day half-price offer for new customers who sign up before June 30".

"OVO customers also get data-free access to more than 20,000 hours of unique content on OVOPlay, including Australian gymnastics, water polo, drag racing, esports and a variety of other entertainment. OVOPlay is also home to streamed radio from Triple M and HIT FM stations across the country.

"OVO's half-price + bonus data offer for the first 90 days is available on new pre-paid mobile services only, including new services purchased by existing OVO customers. It is an online offer only via ovo.com.au and customers must sign up before 30 June. After the first three months, customers on these mobile plans will revert to standard pricing."
