Samsung wants more EDGE

Samsung has scheduled a world ‘Galaxy Unpacked’ event on 13 August followed by the Australian event on 18 August – problem is we don’t know what they are launching.

iTWire colleague Alex Zaharov-Reutt suspects it is a Galaxy Note 5 and that would be good for stylus users and build on its Galaxy Note heritage where it really has the lion’s share of the market.

But Samsung has not done as well as it would like with its Galaxy S6 or the Edge despite the latter being drop dead gorgeous and both using top draw kit.

Whatever it is Samsung needs to break out of its sales funk and pundits are predicting an S6 Edge spinoff called the 5.5”, S6 Edge Plus - no coincidence that Apple calls its 5.5” model an iPhone 6 Plus. A filing on 26 June with the US Patent and Trademark office is for S6 EDGE+.

OnLeaks has posted an image that could be the EDGE+ with dimensions of 154.45x75.8x6.85 model SM-G928.

Given it is bigger it would allow for a bigger battery – at least 3,000 mAh and there is a report that the processor may be beefed up. GSMAreana says it may not have the QHD screen but a standard HD screen (not likely) and will have 4GB RAM, a microSD memory slot, and wireless charging (as the Edge has).

Another leaks site Android Authority shows the EDGE+ with an optional QWERTY keyboard accessory but it looks too cheesy for the svelte, slim EDGE. Come on – it pays designers too much good money in US design office to come up with this!

Of course it could be something as mundane as the Australian release of the S6 Active - IP68 certified - dust and water resistant up to 1.5 meter and 30 minutes and MIL-STD-810G certified - salt, dust, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, transport and thermal shock resistant and with a 3500mAh battery.

And finally there are rumours of a round smart watch called Orbis or the Gear A. A patent application may reveal some of its user interface and it may have a rotating bezel (with similar functionality to Apple’s crown).

Leaked specs seem to indicate

  • Super AMOLED 1.18-inch, 360 x 360, one with a 305 ppi count.
  • Aaccelerometer, gyroscope, GPS, and heart-rate monitor.
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and 3G cellular on board
  • Exynos 1.2GHz dual core CPU
  • 768MB of RAM abnd 4GB storage
  • Qi charging
  • Some form of biometrics to log in and act as authentication for the NFC Samsung pay feature

Anyway Alex and I will both be present and will bring you the ‘Galaxy Unpacked news’ as it happens.
