Samsung vs Huawei Patent Wars, Episode IV: A New Lawsuit

By

The clone wars began long ago, with companies accusing each other of infringing on their intellectual property and fighting each other in court for supremacy.

Uh-oh. Samsung is the No.1 smartphone maker in the world, with Huawei in No.3 spot and Apple in between, but leading in its own way with its own tightly integrated software and hardware ecosystem – and battles for marketshare, profits, popularity, customers and technological achievements ongoing.

Every now and then, however, the playground gets so testy that there’s no way to resolve differences and difficulties through lawsuits.

Apple vs Samsung didn’t look to do either company any true harm, and kept both company names in the limelight during the lengthy legal spats, with speculation that Samsung vs Huawei will also act to attract attention to both companies.

The problem revolves around patents that Samsung says, in a Chinese court (in Beijing), that Huawei infringes on its patents in some of its products, such as the Huawei Mate 8 and Huawei Honor smartphones.

Whether the whole shebang will end up with a cross-licensing patent deal, as speculated upon in Reuters’ report on the development, or not, is yet to be seen, but the opportunity for both tech titans to work more closely is there, even though both companies are fierce competitors.

More detail here – and tune in for the next Patent Wars Episode V: Tech Titan Empires Strike Back!
