South Korean giant Samsung Electronics has opened what is claimed to be the world's biggest manufacturing unit for mobile phones, with the expanded plant being in Noida, close to the Indian capital, New Delhi.

Handsets made in this factory will be exported under the company's "Make for the World" initiative.

In a statement, Samsung said this unit would nearly double its capacity for mobile phones in Noida from 68 million to 120 million, in phased growth that would peak by 2020.

Samsung has been making mobiles in India since 2007 and announced an investment of rupees 4915 crores (A$958 million) to increase capacity at the Noida plant.

All Samsung mobile phones, including the flagship Galaxy S9, S9+ and Galaxy Note8, are made at the plant.

“Our Noida factory, the world’s largest mobile factory, is a symbol of Samsung’s strong commitment to India, and a shining example of the success of the government’s ‘Make in India’ programme," H.C. Hong, chief executive of Samsung India, said.

"Samsung is a long-term partner of India. We ‘Make in India’, ‘Make for India’ and now, we will ‘Make for the World’. We are aligned with government policies and will continue to seek their support to achieve our dream of making India a global export hub for mobile phones."

The expanded plant was inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
