Samsung Gear S3 takes smart watches to the next level

It is water resistant, mil-spec, allows you to make and take phone calls, plays music, has GPS, wireless charging and a has a raft of new features that don’t need a tethered phone to work.

Smartwatches are still a niche category, so it is nice to see a good looking watch with both fitness and smart characteristics in the one device. It may not end up in the sock draw!

The Gear S3 Frontier features a rugged look and feel that is supported by Corning Gorilla Glass SR+, which is specifically designed for wearable devices to provide a tough, scratch resistant and crisp display

The Gear S3 classic offers consumers elegant styling, with its size and shape chosen to offer consistency and balance of a well-crafted luxury watch. Both devices also offer water and dust resistance (IP68).

“We are proud to release the Gear S3 classic and frontier smartwatches. We believe Australians will enjoy these beautifully crafted timepieces which have been designed to offer a classic watch experience, as well as the incredible functionality of our most advanced wearable technology,” said Richard Fink Vice President for IT and Mobile, Samsung Electronics Australia. “These latest additions to our range of watches combine design, functionality and an intuitive interface that have been created to make navigation of content and apps incredibly smooth.”

The watches feature an always on 1.3” Super AMOLED display, the patented rotating bezel, swappable 22mm bands, GPS, Heart rate monitoring, NFC/Samsung Pay, Bluetooth, IP68 water/dust resistance and mil-spec, altimeter, Corning Gorilla Glass SR and a three to five day, wireless fast charge.

Samsung, by its market acceptance, has assembled over 10,000 apps to run on the Tizen-powered smartwatch. You can book and monitor an UBER straight from the screen. There is also a full range of notifications and voice assist to a compatible smartphone.

The cost is A$599 and is available for pre-order from Harvey Norman, Samsung Experience Stores, and the Samsung Online Store, with wider on-sale availability from 18 November. Consumers who order a Gear S3 from a participating retailer during the pre-sale will receive a bonus red watch band.

I currently use a Samsung Gear Fit 2 and have reviewed the Gear 2 . Both are excellent devices and married to the S Health app allow me to review things like sleep and exercise.

iTWire will be reviewing the Gear S3 soon and I am looking forward to seeing the additional functionality.
