LG’s V20 in Oz from 8 November with ‘pro-level video and audio’

By

LG’s newest premium smartphone is set to swing into JB Hi-Fi stores from 8 November at the premium price of $1099, while promising a powerful pro-level multimedia punch.

iTWire's Ray Shaw has previewed LG’s V20 in two articles, first in August with an article entitled ‘LG V20 coming with Nougat’ and in September in an article entitled ‘LG positions new V20 as its flagship smartphone.’

With those two articles as background, if you’re tempted by LG’s V20, you’ll be pleased to know that it is laden with "pro-level" multimedia features.

These start with 4K video recording, alongside a "manual mode which gives the user the freedom to adjust settings such as white balance, manual focus and frame rates".

This manual mode for video recording was something I couldn’t find on the Android 6.0-powered LG G5 video recording mode, so it is great to see that this is definitely included on the V20.

Another pro-level video feature is LG’s Steady Record 2.0, which the company says "helps reduce shaky scenes to create a smoother recording".

We’re told that "it works by using Electronic Image Stabilisation (EIS), which is built into the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor and further uses digital image stabilisation (DIS) in post-processing".

The LG V20 also pairs "high quality video with the same audio formatting used in professional video equipment, utilising 24-bit/48 kHz Linear Pulse Code Modulation (LPCM)".

But, as they say in the classics, that’s not all – there’s more when it comes to the audio side of things.

In designing the LG V20 audio features, LG notes that it "collaborated once again with renowned European audio brand Band & Olufen’s PLAY brand", which it dubs "a diffusion line which focuses on portability and on the go audio solutions".

The V20 is able to "record Hi-Fi audio, providing high quality reproduction of sound to closely resemble the original source".

Even better is that it also supports "optimal playback with Hi-Fi Quad DAC to help minimise distortion and background noise".

Its HD Audio Recorder "gives users the power to create quality recordings using three high Acoustic Overload Point (AOP) microphones to capture sound with a wider dynamic frequency range".

The benefit? LG says this allows "the V20 to handle much louder audio inputs than any other LG smartphone".

Picture-taking has stepped up a notch with the LG V20 too, as it is armed with a "front-facing wide angle 120-degree lens camera, meaning you can take endless selfies and fit a larger group of friends in".

The rear camera also has wide-angle capabilities with a 135-degree lens to capture those dramatic Australian landscape scenes. Or dramatic scenes in whichever country you happen to be in as Australia doesn’t have a monopoly on the dramatic.

The V20 also "blends chic style with durability through the generous use of lightweight and strong AL6013 aluminium alloy".

Equipped with Android 7.0 Nougat, you’ll also get another LG speciality: a removable battery for added convenience.

Other useful benefits include dual 3G/4G sim slots, as well as a separate expandable micro SD (up to 2TB) slot that can be used in conjunction with dual sim slots.

This means no more relegation to 2G on the second sim slot, a crucial factor for Australia given that the end of 2016 sees the end of Telstra’s 2G network, while 2017 will see both Optus and Vodafone relegating 2G to obsolescence, with all three carriers set to refarm 2G spectrum for 4G uses.

Bruce Leigh, marketing manager for LG Mobile Australia, commented: “I’m hugely excited by our flagship LG V20 because access to high quality audio and filming capabilities via mobile should not be limited to professionals, particularly at a time when creating exciting and engaging content is a form of self-expression. LG understands this need, and has created our best ever device to allow our customers to take creativity into their own hands.”

Julian Kipping, general manager at Bang & Olufsen Australia & New Zealand, said: “The LG V20 is the perfect device to house our signature Bang & Olufsen sound, reproducing high quality audio the way the artist intended. We are immensely proud to continue our partnership with LG Electronics latest smartphone release, which will provide a refined and detailed audio experience for its users.”
