The iPhone 12 has dominated the best-sellers list for the first quarter of 2021, both in terms of volume and revenue, the technology analyst firm Counterpoint Research says.

Global revenue for the quarter crossed US$100 billion (A$129.4 billion) for the first time, with flagship models being the driving force. The wholesale average selling price was used for calculations.

Counterpoint said the top 10 list of the models that pulled in the most revenue was dominated by Apple and Samsung.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max was top of the list, following by the iPhone 12, the iPhone 12 Pro, the iPhone 11 and the Samsung S21 Ultra 5G.

The only brand apart from these two to figure in this list was the Huawei Mate 40 Pro which took the eighth spot.

Another notable aspect of this list was that, apart from the iPhone 11 and iPhone SE 2020, all the other models in the top 10 supported 5G.

These 10 models made up 46% of the global revenue, in sharp contrast to a list of the top 10 for volume sales which captured only 21% of the global volume.

Counterpoint said looking at volume sales, the iPhone 12 was at the top of the list, followed by the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 Pro.

There were three Xiaomi models among the top 10, with the remainder being Apple and Samsung. Sales for the Redmi 9A were good in China and India, while the Redmi 9 performed well in the South East Asian market.

The strong performance of the Redmi 9A, Redmi 9 and Redmi Note 9 helped Xiaomi maintain its pole position in the sub-US$150 price band globally, capturing a 19% share in the segment.
