Google gets developers dancing the Tango Featured

By

Online behemoth Google has attempted to take some news time away from Apple with its Project Tango tablet development kit, which boasts 3D mapping and sensing capabilities, along with extremely high-end specifications for a tablet.

The dev kit, which, like Google Glass, isn't recommended for everyday consumers, will go on sale for developers later this month for US$1,024.

Project Tango is Google's way of betting on a 3D virtual future, much in the same way that Facebook is with its US$2 billion acquisition of Oculus, a startup focused on 3D headsets, announced back in March.

As we reported back in February Google had already announced the Project Tango concept, but only today do we finally get details, including pricing details, of the tablet and its developer tools.

"Today, developers excited about Project Tango can start building using the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit," the company said.

"Created in close collaboration with Nvidia, the development kit includes the new Tegra K1 mobile processor to create a platform designed for computer vision and 3D sensing. You can use the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit to make applications that track full 3-dimensional motion and capture surfaces in the environment."

The Project Tango tablet features a 7-inch display and is powered by a Nvidia Tegra K1 processor and 4 GB of RAM, which is beastly hardware for a tablet and will no doubt come in handy for 3D mapping capabilities.

The device will also be equipped with a 4-megapixel rear camera with motion tracking and integrated depth sensor, along with a front-facing 120 degree camera. Google is including 128 GB of internal storage and the tablet will ship with a built-in 4G LTE radio, Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 4.0 LE (low energy), and GPS.

On the Project Tango Tablet Development Kit page Google notes that the tablet is not intended for consumers and will be available in limited quantities when it launches. Interested users or developers can register their interest here.

Google concludes its blog post with "The future is awesome." Yes it is.
