Apple announces (PRODUCT)RED iPhone 8 and 8 Plus Special Editions

By

Apple today announced the release of (PRODUCT)RED special edition versions of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus handsets, available from 13 April.

Apple has previously released (PRODUCT)RED editions of its iPhones, with (RED) being a cause Apple supports, raising funds to help provide testing, counselling and treatment for tens of millions of people living with HIV/AIDS.

The (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition comes, as you might expect, in a red finish and is a unique colour across Apple’s range. Both the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus versions of the phone will have a red glass enclosure, matching aluminium band and a black front. Apple describes the design and colours as stunning, beautiful and sleek.

While the iPhone X is not being re-released in a new colour, Apple also introduced a new (PRODUCT)RED iPhone X Leather Folio, available from 10 April. The folio is crafted from “specially tanned and finished European leather for a luxurious look and feel".

A portion of proceeds for all (PRODUCT)RED purchases go directly to Global Fund HIV/AIDS grants that provide testing, counselling, treatment and prevention programs with a specific focus on eliminating transmission of the virus from mothers to their babies. Since partnering with (RED) in 2006 Apple has donated more than US$160 million to the Global Fund, serving as the organisation’s largest corporate donor.

“This special edition (PRODUCT)RED iPhone features a stunning red and black colour combination and also offers customers the opportunity to make an impact in fighting the spread of HIV and AIDS,” said Greg Joswiak, Apple’s vice-president of Product Marketing. “iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus improve on everything we love about iPhone, including Retina HD displays that are more beautiful than ever, the most powerful and smartest chip ever in a smartphone with the A11 Bionic and more advanced cameras for unbelievable photos and videos. We are proud to support (RED) with this bold new iPhone and hope customers think it is as special as we do.”

"Today’s announcement is further evidence of Apple’s leadership in and commitment to the AIDS fight since the beginning of (RED) in 2006,” said Deborah Dugan, (RED)’s chief executive. “The more than US$160 million Apple has donated in the last 11 years today equates to more than 800 million days of life-saving ARV medication that prevents the transmission of HIV from mothers to their babies. We’re honoured that Apple has dedicated its resources to our purpose, and can’t wait to see customers bring our mission to life through the purchase of iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition.”

The iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition will be available in 64GB and 256GB models, starting at an RRP of $1079 inc. GST from Apple’s online and brick-and-mortar stores, through the Apple Store app, and through Apple Authorised Resellers and select carriers.

Both models are available to order from 10:30 pm AEST on 10 April and will be delivered to customers in Australia and a range of other countries on 13 April, with other countries to follow later in April and May.

The new (PRODUCT)RED iPhone X Leather Folio will be available from Apple for $145 inc. GST.

Every customer who buys an iPhone 8 or iPhone 8 Plus (PRODUCT)RED Special Edition from Apple will be offered free personal set-up in-store or online.
