NetComm Wireless scores global M2M supply contract from Vodafone

Vodafone has contracted Netcomm Wireless (ASX: NTC) to supply M2M cellular modems for its global M2M business.

The contract is with Vodafone Global Enterprise, Vodafone's specialist enterprise communications organisation.

According to Netcomm: "Under the agreement, NetComm Wireless will supply M2M IP modems that have been custom designed to meet the global deployment requirements of Vodafone and its partners. The device will be compatible with Vodafone networks worldwide and will be managed by Vodafone's Global M2M Platform which enables plug-and-play service provisioning, remote management and support across the globe."

The products will be available from March 2013 and, NetComm said: "Revenues will directly relate to the success that Vodafone has in securing M2M contracts."

NetComm has been a provider of M2M products for several years but in mid 2011 it announced a renewed focus on the sector, saying: "Additional resources are now focussed on this segment and while progress is planned to be made in the 2011/12 year, the benefits of this focus will be seen in future years."

Since then it has announced a contract to supply M2M gear for the Victorian sewerage system and forged an alliance with wireless smart grid software company Grid Net to design and manufacture Grid Net-enabled 3G wireless communications cards for the global smart grid market.

Vodafone entered the global M2M market in July 2009 when it launched a global M2M service platform to help companies deploy and manage large, wireless M2M projects. Vodafone said the platform would be supported by an expert team with worldwide responsibility for growing the business.

"Vodafone will provide a single point of contact for customers to manage the complex area of M2M connectivity from early concept development to support for national and multinational deployments.

"The Vodafone M2M global service platform, with its unique patent-pending functionality, will provide corporate customers with managed connectivity for M2M smart service deployments. Companies will be able to centrally manage and control the process of rolling out M2M devices across many countries, increasing the speed of implementation and reducing the cost, complexity and risk traditionally associated with deploying such projects."
