Amazon to acquire mesh Wi-Fi vendor eero

By

E-commerce and cloud giant Amazon has reached a definitive agreement to acquire home mesh Wi-Fi vendor eero.

"We are incredibly impressed with the eero team and how quickly they invented a Wi-Fi solution that makes connected devices just work," said Amazon devices and services senior vice-president Dave Limp.

"We have a shared vision that the smart home experience can get even easier, and we're committed to continue innovating on behalf of customers."

Like other mesh providers, eero's system use multiple access points to create a single Wi-Fi network that covers a home, regardless of its size or shape.

Amazon's Echo and Echo Dot smart speakers, Dash Buttons (which allow products to be re-ordered simply by pressing a button), Kindle Readers, Fire tablets and Fire TV adaptors all work best when there's a good Wi-Fi network, so the acquisition makes sense.

"From the beginning, eero's mission has been to make the technology in homes just work," said eero co-founder and chief executive Nick Weaver.

"We started with Wi-Fi because it's the foundation of the modern home. Every customer deserves reliable and secure Wi-Fi in every room. By joining the Amazon family, we're excited to learn from and work closely with a team that is defining the future of the home, accelerate our mission, and bring eero systems to more customers around the globe."

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.
