Brisbane-based networking and security specialist RIoT Solutions has officially opened its security operations centre (SOC).

RioT's SOC houses 15 full-time analysts and cybersecurity professionals, and forms the basis of the company's managed security services which include managed visibility, threat intelligence, vulnerability-management-as-a-service, endpoint security-as-a-service, user-awareness and incident response services.

"We are extremely excited about our new SOC facility. Not only is it proudly Queensland based, but it also provides us a fantastic launching pad to service the wider Australian market without using offshoring services", said managing director and CEO Rob Merkwitza.

"We are convinced that providing local, fast and agile managed services in the Cybersecurity domain is an important factor for companies looking for a trusted, skilled partner and our customers have made this very clear to us to date."

According to national SOC manager Jon Robertson, the centre ingests more than a terabyte of data and manages 100,000 assets for approximately 50 enterprise and government customers.

"From an operational perspective the biggest challenge we face is skillset. It is difficult to find people that have the right balance of system administration and situational awareness. Our strategy has been to build out that skillset through a well-defined graduate program which has proved highly successful to date".

National product manager Nick Long said "Although there is a need and a lot of focus on the identification and stopping of active threats in the network, we have found that consistent user-awareness such as regular phishing campaigns, dark web intelligence and having the confidence in relying on fast and professional incident response in the event of a breach is just as important.

"Our most recent endpoint security-as-a-service addition in partnership with Carbon Black has had a very positive response from our customer base."

Merkwitza added "The acceleration of state-based investments across the country are filtering down to OT/IT services.

"Our key differentiator is that we provide our services across both disciplines which we are seeing converge more and more. With our experience during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, we see ourselves very well position for the recent announcement of the potential of South East Queensland hosting the Olympic Games."
