Alcatel-Lucent to open its own campus in UTS

By

Alcatel-Lucent is to open a new campus within the University of Technology Sydney that will offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses shaped by Alcatel-Lucent training materials, with elements delivered in conjunction with Alcatel-Lucent staff.

According to Alcatel-Lucent, "By 2012, up to 100 UTS students per year will be able to access Alcatel-Lucent's facilities and infrastructure. Training will focus on technologies which will form a fundamental part of a broadband-enabled Australia including voice over IP, video over IP, access IP technology, PON (passive optical networks) technology and others.

"Courses will form part of the Bachelor of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Practice and also Master of Engineering Studies. Up to 1,500 Alcatel-Lucent staff and employees of customers are also expected to use the new facilities each year."

The new campus is scheduled to open in August and will, according to Alcatel-Lucent "include a state-of-the-art laboratory and training rooms with cutting-edge equipment provided by Alcatel-Lucent."

Alcatel-Lucent's involvement is through the Alcatel-Lucent University, the company's organisation for learning and professional development, which is accredited by the European Federation of Management Development. It operates a global network of 18 training centres "strategically located to be in close proximity to major customer and employee concentrations."

Alcatel-Lucent claims that "each University is individually accredited to ensure a consistent, high-quality training experience. Alcatel-Lucent University's team of instructors combines strong backgrounds in engineering and field experience and are certified in pedagogical and technical aspects."

The company says that, in 2009 the University delivered 2.6 million student hours of training globally.

The deal between UTS and Alcatel-Lucent follows the announcement earlier this month of a new post-graduate course in network systems architecture by the University of NSW, developed in conjunction with Cisco and designed to equip students for roles in the National Broadband Network and cloud computing.

And just a couple of weeks before that, Huawei Australia announced a partnership with RMIT University in Melbourne to deliver training in information and communications technologies. Huawei said it expected that 500 students in Victoria would be trained over the next three years and said it was in discussions with a number of other Australian Universities to provide similar training, bringing the total number to students to 1,000 - 2,000 nationally over this period.
