VIDEO: Samsung announces 4G-enabled Tab S4 and Tab A Android tablets

The latest Android tablets from Samsung have arrived, the premium Tab S4, 2-in-1 DeX-compatible device "for the home and office and everywhere in between" and the more family-oriented and, presumably, more affordable Samsung Tab A, both with 10.5-inch screens.

Samsung has announced, but not yet launched, or at least locally launched, its new Galaxy Tab S4 and Tab A Android tablets, with Samsung Electronics Australia stating it "is excited to confirm that the Galaxy Tab S4 and Tab A 10.5-inch tablets will be available in Australia. Information regarding pricing and availability will be announced closer to the launch date.”

However, we do have all the details from Samsung, which is all shared below, and we start with the Tab S4.

Samsung says its Galaxy Tab S4 "delivers an experience that helps you work smarter by keeping you operating at the highest levels. Paired with a polished modern design, an immersive display, four speakers and enhanced entertainment features, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 is the perfect device for those who need something portable like a tablet and capable like a PC".

D.J. Koh, president and chief executive of Samsung Electronics, explained: "At Samsung, we believe tablets play an increasingly important role in making lives easier and improving the mobile experience for everyone.

“With the Galaxy Tab S4, we’re introducing a premium tablet, equipped with Samsung DeX that helps consumers perform their absolute best wherever they go. We look forward to providing our customers with a sense of leisure and comfort knowing that this new addition to our ecosystem of connected devices is also packed with features to help them stay entertained.”

So, what of the new Samsung DeX compatibility, which naturally works with the S Pen?

Well, here we learn that the Tab S4 brings Samsung DeX to the tablet for the first time.

"When connected to the optional Book Cover Keyboard (sold separately) or launched from the Quick Panel, the Galaxy Tab S4 powers on Samsung DeX, giving users the option to switch from the Android interface to a desktop experience.

"With Samsung DeX, you can open multiple desktop-style windows for your Android apps, including the Microsoft Office suite, directly on the Galaxy Tab S4, and re-size them when needed. Drag and drop content between apps and use keyboard shortcuts and commands for efficiency.

"If more screen is needed, there is also an option to extend Samsung DeX to an external monitor with a compatible HDMI to USB-C multi-port adapter (not included). When connected, the Galaxy Tab S4 can serve as a track pad or a sketch pad, and new this year, the Galaxy Tab S4 can continue to work as a fully functional Android tablet, giving users two screens to accomplish tasks.

"Whether at the office, at home, or on-the-go, the Galaxy Tab S4 keeps you going with a 7300mAh battery that provides up to 16 hours of video playback. Additionally, with Samsung Knox, Samsung’s defence-grade mobile security platform, customers and companies can ensure critical information is protected at multiple levels of the device. IT managers can also tailor the employee interface to align with business needs.

"Samsung’s S Pen comes in the box with the Galaxy Tab S4 to satisfy even more productive needs. It offers users a great way to express their creativity and communicate. They can take notes on the fly through the Screen-Off Memo feature, as well as navigate, translate and organise notes through Samsung Notes, and even send personalised texts through Samsung Live Message – all with the S Pen."

Samsung also naturally notes the Tab S4's great screen "fit for any job – or movie".

Here Samsung says "it’s easier to get more done when you have the right screen. Even the busiest professionals still take time to sit back with a game or movie. Now you can enjoy a more immersive experience on a device you can take anywhere.

"While similar in size to the Galaxy Tab S3, the Galaxy Tab S4 sports narrower bezels to fit a large 10.5-inch display with Super AMOLED technology, as well as a 16:10 screen ratio with 2560x1600, 287 pixels per inch (PPI) resolution for vivid picture detail and true-to-life visuals.

"When it comes to audio, the Galaxy Tab S4 also comes with four speakers tuned by AKG and Dolby Atmos immersive sound technology, which brings entertainment to life through moving audio that flows all around you. With Dolby Atmos, the Galaxy Tab S4 supports crisper dialogue, enveloping sound fields, maximised loudness without distortion, and consistent playback volume."

Then there's the home automation and connected devices aspect, dubbed "enhanced connectivity to make your life easier".

"The Galaxy Tab S4 also features new and improved capabilities designed to manage your connected devices and lifestyle. Samsung Flow allows users to manage all of their devices easily by connecting and transferring files, tasks and notifications seamlessly.

"The SmartThings app2 on the Galaxy Tab S4 makes it easy to monitor and control your smart home devices right from the tablet. Plus, the Galaxy Tab S4’s Daily Board3 allows you to view your favourite photos and everyday information such as the weather, calendar and time in one, easy-to-access place".

Specs for the Tab S4 and Tab A are at the end of this article, along with an infographic on differences between the Tab S3 and S4.

Next up is the Tab A, which Samsung says promises "high-quality entertainment features, now at a budget-friendly price".

"Featuring new family-friendly entertainment options and enhanced audio and visual features, the Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch is ideal for enjoying your favourite movies or shows at home or on the go.

"Whether you’re lounging on the couch or enjoying a long drive with your family, the Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch can keep you and your children entertained for hours. And with added connectivity features like Samsung’s SmartThings, managing your home has never been easier.

Jason Lee, director and head of Tablet Product Strategy Group at Mobile Communications Business, Samsung Electronics, said: "We are proud to announce the Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch, Samsung’s latest addition to the tablet lineup with capabilities that make life easier, and more entertaining for the whole family.

“Featuring a refreshed design, enhanced parental controls and new home connectivity capabilities, the Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch is the perfect complement for the modern household.”

With the Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch, Samsung says "friends and family can watch movies, play games, listen to music or browse content together on a 10.5-inch display featuring a generous 16:10 screen-to-body ratio thanks to its slimmer bezels".

"Four speakers are built into each corner of the tablet with support from Dolby Atmos, which transforms your mobile entertainment experience with moving audio that flows all around you.

"The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch also gives parents the control to manage content and usage time with Kids Mode, Samsung’s child-friendly tablet interface designed to make learning and entertainment simple, safe and fun.

"This mode features Kids Browser, Galaxy Apps for Kids and eight free child-friendly apps from family favourite brands including Toca Hair Salon 3 and BRIO World – Railway. Families can also use Multi User Mode on the Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch to create various accounts on the same device, such as one account for a child with separate accounts for the parents – for greater functionality on a single tablet.

"Managing the family and home has never been easier with the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch through enhanced connectivity features. Samsung’s Always On Daily Board brings integral daily information to one easy-to-view home hub including a clock, calendar and weather updates as well as a digital photo library.

"And now users can easily control their home environment from their family-friendly tablet with SmartThings on the Galaxy Tab A 10.5-inch. Control your connected home appliances via SmartThings with the touch of a button. Whether you’re getting the kids ready for bed or need to turn up the heat during a rainy day, smart home controls make it easy to manage your connected home."

Active Vs. Passive DWDM Solutions

An active approach to your growing optical transport network & connectivity needs.

Building dark fibre network infrastructure using WDM technology used to be considered a complex challenge that only carriers have the means to implement.

This has led many enterprises to build passive networks, which are inferior in quality and ultimately limit their future growth.

Why are passive solutions considered inferior? And what makes active solutions great?

Read more about these two solutions, and how PacketLight fits into all this.
