VIDEO: Nokia 2.1 comes to Australia with 4000 mAh '2-day battery life'

On sale for $199 outright or $149 via Telstra Prepaid, Nokia has added 50% more processing power to its new Nokia 2.1 model, along with a 5.5-inch screen and stereo speakers.

Nokia's new 2.1 model will be available to buy in Blue/Copper from 4 September for A$199 at Harvey Norman and JB Hi-Fi, and for A$149 pre-paid at Telstra.

It promises a "massive 50% performance boost on its predecessor", along with quality features like a large 5.5-inch screen, dual front-front facing speakers and "an incredible two-day battery life to give you everything you need for entertainment on the go".

As the Nokia 2.1 comes with 1GB RAM, it's essential to know that it comes with Android Oreo (GO edition), Google's optimised OS designed for smartphones with 1GB RAM or less.

This promises "a smooth Android experience, more storage out of the box and consuming less data".

Long lasting entertainment

As you'd expect, Nokia is talking up its huge 4000 mAh battery, which just happens to be the same size as that delivered in the new Galaxy Note9, although obviously the Note9 is a super-premium phone with the best processor, six or eight times more RAM depending on the model, a bigger screen and more.

You're also only getting 8GB storage, of which an unspecified amount is taken up by the OS and pre-installed apps, rather than the 128GB or 512GB on the two Note9 models, but you can add up to 128GB storage via a MicroSD card, and Android Oreo GO does give you more free storage than regular Android, and with various Android GO optimised apps, you can do more with the remaining storage than otherwise.

You also don't get features like a fingerprint reader, but that said, the Note9 is approximately 10 times the price depending on the model purchased, so it's not fair to compare to the two beyond the battery, which Nokia notes "now charges even faster so you can get back up and running even more quickly than before".

The 5.5-inch HD display is also 20% bigger than the original, with Nokia telling us that "you can enjoy high-definition videos on the go while the dual speakers with bespoke 3D formed stainless steel detail gives you an amazing stereo sound".

Here's the official Nokia 2.1 video, the article continues below:

Naturally, Nokia exclaims you'll enjoy "quality and design you expect from a Nokia phone".

The processor within is "the upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon 425, 64-bit Mobile Platform", with Nokia stating it "gives fans the 50% faster and smoother performance they asked for with fast switching between apps".

In addition, "you can capture the action wherever you are with the Nokia 2.1’s 5MP front-facing selfie snapper or 8MP rear camera with auto focus".

"Offering the quality and style you expect from a Nokia phone, Nokia 2.1’s sophisticated Nordic design and metallic accents guarantee that you will stand out from the crowd.

"Its sleek, rounded and ergonomically designed, inherently coloured polycarbonate back keeps your phone looking great even after long periods of use."

James Robinson, acting country manager, Australia and New Zealand, HMD Global, said: “Being able to rely on your smartphone from when you first wake up until you go to bed again is so important which is why the Nokia 2.1, with its two-day battery and latest Android Oreo (GO edition) innovations, has been one of the most welcome devices in our portfolio.

"We always want to keep giving our customers more so we’ve listened to their feedback and given them a faster processor, bigger screen and dual stereo speakers to give them an even better long-lasting experience to go with the great battery life."

Pure, secure and up-to-date Android Oreo (Go edition)

Tailored to devices with 1GB RAM or less, Nokia reminds us that Android Oreo (GO edition) comes with "a new range of apps from Google designed to run faster while consuming less data.

"Optimised to be smooth and fast, these include Google Go – a Web search app, Google Maps Go and Google Assistant for Android (GO edition), to quickly send messages, make calls, set alarms and do more, simply by using your voice.

"With fewer pre-installed and much lighter apps on Android Oreo (Go edition), you get 2x more available storage out of the box compared with Android Nougat. All Nokia smartphones come with no bloatware, skins, UI changes or unnecessary apps pre-loaded onto your phone, giving you a pure Android experience.

"Android Oreo (GO edition) offers a smooth and responsive experience, while making sure your device gets the latest security updates and features, including Google Play Protect, which continuously works to keep your device, data and apps safe."
