VIDEO: Samsung unveils Bixby 2.0 and DeX-enabled Galaxy Tab S5e, its new Android 9 tablet Featured

Said to be "built for connectivity and entertainment", Samsung boasts its new Galaxy Tab S5e "packs smart features into a thinner and lighter frame".

Ahead of its global "Unpacked" media event in San Francisco next week, which is also expected to unveil the Samsung Galaxy S10 range of smartphones, as well as more information on its forthcoming foldable phone, Samsung is also launching a new Android tablet - the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e.

A Samsung Electronics Australia spokesperson said "Samsung Electronics Australia can confirm that the new tablet will be available in Australia, with local pricing and availability to be confirmed closer to local launch".

The Galaxy Tab S5e is billed as "slimmer, lighter and thoughtfully designed with smart features to keep you connected", and is its first to come with Samsung's Bixby 2.0 assistant, 3 months free Spotify Premium, 4 months YouTube Premium, Dolby Atmos-capable AKG speakers and plenty more.

Your window into Samsung's Tab S5e world is its 10.5-inch WQXGA Super AMOLED display, and coupled with a fast-charging 7040mAh battery, Samsung boasts its new tablet is "meticulously engineered for rich and immersive entertainment experiences, so you can enjoy unputdownable content without compromise".

You see, whether it’s an edge-of-your-seat movie or your favourite TV series, Samsung says you can "experience content fully and in outstanding detail on Samsung’s iconic and immersive Super AMOLED display, complete with a 16:10 screen ratio and no visible home key.

"The Tab S5e offers a 10.5-inch Edge to Edge Display and slimmed-down bezels with an 81.8% screen-to-body ratio for an enhanced, immersive viewing experience that will bring content to life.

"With the Tab S5e, you can also experience the outstanding YouTube Premium service, free for up to 4 months. So you can enjoy all your favourite content across YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Gaming without limits and in stunning definition."

The YouTube Premium offer is "only available in selected countries" - so hopefully, that includes Australia too - we'll know when it launches locally.

Here's the official Samsung Tab S5e intro video, the article continues thereafter:

Matching the visual department is the audio experience

We're told the Tab S5e is "perfectly complemented with rich, stunning sound thanks to its Quad Speakers, which incorporate auto rotate stereo technology for powerful, louder audio that adapts to how you’re holding the tablet (portrait/landscape).

"The Tab S5e also features Dolby Atmos integration and sound by AKG, for immersive 3D sound and professional balanced audio. With Spotify preloaded and a free premium subscription for up to 3 months for new members, the Tab S5e allows you to stream your favourite tunes uninterrupted, anywhere."

The Spotify Premium offer is "only available in selected countries" - so hopefully, that includes Australia too - we'll know when it launches locally.

DJ Koh, President and CEO of IT & Mobile Communications Division, Samsung Electronics said: "The Tab S5e is a top-tier tablet with a sleek design and powerful features, available at a new price point.

"For users who want intelligence that keeps them connected so they can get more done—as well as a big, beautiful screen for a rich, premium entertainment experience—the Tab S5e delivers.”

Refined design

Naturally, Samsung has a design story to tell, and states that with "its gorgeous, refreshed design, the Tab S5e embodies practicality and style".

Samsung proudly boasts of "an incredibly thin 5.5mm sleek metal body, and weighing only 400g" which means the Tab S5e is "ultra-portable, durable, and designed to integrate seamlessly into your everyday lifestyle".

As you'd expect, there are a range of colours on offer, dubbed "fresh and modern monochromatic colours including Silver, Black, and Gold", which apparently means "you can choose a style that reflects your look".

The 7040mAh battery promises "an extended battery life lasting up to 14.5 hours", which thus means that "the Tab S5e is optimised for long-lasting performance, giving you the freedom to browse, stream and play for longer".

Next up is the promised Bixby 2.0 "intelligence built-in".

We're told the Tab S5e "allows you to take complete control of your connected world".

It's the first Samsung tablet to feature the new Bixby 2.0, and thus the Tab S5e offers a "smarter and more convenient way to interact with your device, and serves as an ideal hub to control your connected home devices".

It's all part of Samsung's intelligent, connected home push, as when paired with compatible devices, you can "switch on your TV and your lights at the same time with Quick Command, which allows you to customise several actions under one command—making voice control of your home environment even quicker, simpler and more tailored to you".

Samsung DeX

Of course, Samsung DeX is still a primary part of the picture for "when you need to get things done" in a more traditional computing environment.

You can buy a compatible keyboard (sold separately), and activate the Samsung DeX mode for that more traditional PC-like environment.

There's also call and message continuity, letting you "answer a call or reply to a message directly from your tablet – even when your phone is far from reach, or on a different Wi-Fi network".

The Tab S5e will be available in select markets including U.S., Germany and other countries from 2Q 2019, which presumably includes Australia in this timeframe based on the Samsung Electronics Australia executive's comments above.

The model listed below is Wi-Fi only, whether a 4G or 5G enabled model will appear is yet to be seen, although a 4G model is clearly an expectation. Also whether Samsung will ever create a foldable tablet that is 7 to 10.5 inches and then even larger when unfolded is not yet known, but it's presumably on the roadmap.
