Acer brings Quantum Dot display to tablets – more from Computex 2017


Acer is the first to use Quantum Dot display technology in a consumer tablet and has added four speakers and a subwoofer for good measure. At Computex, it also announced a new Spin 1, 360° laptop, the new Nitro 5 notebook for casual gamers and the Predator Triton 700 notebook for serious gamers.

Acer Iconia Tavb 10The Acer Iconia Tab 10 (A3-A50) uses a 10.1”, 1280 x 800, IPS Quantum Dot touch display for wider colour range with higher brightness, deeper saturation and better accuracy for dramatically more vivid visuals. The sound system includes an Acer-patented subwoofer and four speakers. It has Acer MediaMaster to allow users to set preferences for different types of movies or music.

It is powered by a MediaTek MT816 quad-core processor and has a PowerVR (GE8300) graphics processor. RAM is 2GB and storage is either 16/32 with a microSD slot. It is 9mm thin and weighs 530g. It has a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front, Wi-Fi AC dual band, Bluetooth 4.0 and a quick charge battery for up to 8 hours’ video playback.

Also announced is the Iconia One 10 With dual micro-USB ports and On-The-Go (OTG) support, the Iconia One 10 (B3-A40FHD) provides enhanced productivity as it allows the device to be charged and connected to external devices such as storage or a mouse at the same time, while a Bluetooth keyboard can be connected for text input. Android 7.0 also supports multi-windows and quick app switching.

The Spin 1 is an 11.6”, 360° hinge, HD, Windows 10 laptop supporting Windows Ink through an Acer Active Stylus. It weighs 1.25 kg, is 14 mm thin and uses Intel Pentium or Celeron processors, 4 GB DDR3L memory as well as a choice of 32/64/128 GB eMMC storage. It claims to have eight hours of battery life with four versatile modes (laptop, display, tablet, and tent).

The Nitro 5 series is described as for “Casual gamers” who can choose from configurations featuring up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti graphics paired with 7th Generation Intel Core i7 or i5 processors, or models with AMD Radeon RX550 graphics with 7th Generation AMD A-Series FX, A12 or A10 APUs. These models all feature Windows 10 and support up to 32GB of DDR4 2400 MHz memory.

The Nitro 5’s design includes a matte black chassis with a hairline finish. A red hinge runs along the back of the notebook, above a bold black grill vent. The keyboard features red backlighting, and the WASD keys and touchpad are also outlined in red for ease-of-use.

The Predator (Acers gaming brand) 700 Notebook features a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (overclockable) GPU and standard-voltage 7th Generation Intel Core processors. The 18.9 mm-thin aluminium chassis uses AeroBlade 3D metal fans that increase airflow by 35 percent. Two NVMe PCIe SSDs] in RAID 0 configuration and up to 32 GB of DDR4 2400 MHz memory helps the system run at peak performance.

It has a 15.6-inch full HD IPS display supporting NVIDIA G-SYNC, Dolby Atmos surround sound and Acer TrueHarmony delivers immersive audio, and Skype for Business Certification is present. It uses Killer’s DoubleShot Pro networking and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, which provides speeds up to 40 Gbps and supports dual 4K video output.

No gaming notebook is complete without an RGB backlit mechanical keyboard. PredatorSense software enables gamers to control and customise the Predator Triton 700’s vitals from one central interface, including lighting, hotkeys, fan control, and general system monitoring.
