Home Home Tech 'True hybrid smart watch' lands just in time for Christmas

Fighting fit and fighting Fitbit, Apple and others is a new competitor: the Striiv Apex HR, promising to help you reach your summer fitness goals and keep on top of your busy lifestyle.

Combining the features of a "high-tech activity tracker with the convenience of instant message and app display features of a smart watch,", the Apex HR does this while being a lot more affordable at $179 than today's traditional $500+ smart watches.

StriivStriiv founder, David Wang, said: "We’re thrilled to launch the brand new Apex HR onto the Australian market. It’s a combination of an activity tracker, a continuous heart rate monitor and a smart watch.

"Striiv technology means you can see all your text messages and social media notifications and even get weather updates, in fact it’s like having a health and personal diary accessible on your wrist simply through the touch of a button.

“With Summer here and beach days beckoning, it’s very exciting that our flagship product is now water resistant too," Wang continued.

We're told the Apex HR wearable "has been designed to cater to all different types of people. It doesn’t matter if you are a fitness fanatic or you’re starting exercise for the first time, if you’re trying to achieve new lifestyle goals, get fit, train for a specific event, lose weight or maintain weight; the Apex HR will suit you."

Wang concluded: "We have ensured that there are different functions that will cater to all types of dietary or lifestyle requirements too. For people who take medication on a regular basis, the vibrating alarms will make remembering far easier.

"Whilst people with diabetes can now diarise their sugar intake so they can stay on top of their sugar levels. Those following specific dietary regimes, such as gluten free, can now accurately record which days they did and didn’t avoid gluten."

My thoughts? Well, I haven't tried one yet, but it looks like one of Fitbit's models, with major improvement in battery life, and a range of features.

I guess you'd think of this class of smart fitness wearable, with the features as listed below, as like being a feature phone, compared with a dedicated watchOS, Android Wear or Samsung Gear Tizen smartwatch that would be akin to a smartphone, but for many people, this will be absolutely more than enough, while at a more affordable price.

The Striiv website has four models in the range, with the Striiv HR the top of the line flagship.

The key features of the Striiv Apex HR are:

  • Continuous heart rate monitor
  • Diarising (diet, weight, medication, hydration)
  • Activity monitor (steps, distance, calories, activity time)
  • Sleep monitor
  • Caller ID and text message alerts
  • App alerts such as Facebook, Whatsapp
  • Vibrating alarms
  • Water Resistant
  • 12 day battery life
  • Built-in USB charger
