Surface Laptop best with Windows 10 S upgraded to 10 Pro

The verdicts for Microsoft’s crippled Windows 10 S operating system continue coming in, with yet another source strongly advising an upgrade from 10 S to 10 Pro.

Want a version of Windows that can run just a tiny proportion of the software ever made for Windows, in return for supposedly being better protected from viruses, malware and ransomware?

Then you’ll want Microsoft’s Surface Laptop, or one of the other computers that come with Windows 10 S.

The only thing is, the people reviewing the Surface Laptop are advising you take advantage of the free upgrade period that Microsoft is extending until the end of the year.

That upgrade lets you go from Windows 10 S to Windows 10 Pro, without having to pay the US$50 upgrade fee that its customers will be slugged with, come 2018.

TechCrunch noted the DisplayPort, and the single USB 3.0 port.

This is sad to see – Microsoft should have included a couple of USB-C ports, or even four, as a USB-C port can be converted into anything you want.

Apple has been criticised for having only one USB-C port on its MacBook, and even Apple has two USB-C ports on its MacBook Pro without TouchBar, and four on the model that does have the TouchBar included.

So, for Microsoft to cheap out with just a single USB 3.0 port is disappointing, even though it was presumably done to keep the internal motherboard smaller and production costs lower.

There’s also concern over how easy it will be to clean a dirtied Alcantara surface.

There is also faint praise which is damning, considering how often Microsoft has compared its Surface devices to a MacBook.

Despite those comparisons and Surface devices having been out for years now, TechCrunch says: “It’s the first Surface device that can truly be considered a MacBook competitor.”

So, what were all the other ones then?

Anyway, TechCrunch comes to the conclusion any sane person would. If you want the full power of your computer, then upgrade to Windows 10 Pro.

My embellishment is that “if you want Windows for Training Wheels Workgroups because you’re a malware magnet, then stick with Windows 10 S.”

Look, if you want a safe computing experience that is much safer, and has much better software, and doesn't treat you like an idiot, but actually respects you and rewards you with computing experiences Microsoft still doesn't know how to deliver — despite obviously kinda sorta trying with Windows 10 S — then there's a real alternative.

It’s called an iPad. It's also called a Mac. Which the Surface Laptop is trying to convince you not to buy.

iPads and Macs even run Microsoft Office, if that's what you want or need.

What is it that they say about imitations, and how you’re better off buying the original?

Well, its true. Windows 10 S is an imitation of Windows 10 Pro, and the Surface Laptop is an imitation of a real MacBook.

Good luck – it's your money!
