AMD Ryzen 5 claims 87% more performance than competitor

AMD has released four new AMD Ryzen 5 models and claims the Ryzen 5, 1600X provides 87% more performance than a comparable Intel 7th generation Core i5-7600k processor.

AMD has embraced its gaming CPU and Radeon GPU heritage with the Ryzen 7 series, yet is keen to ensure it is viewed as a mainstream desktop and notebook “engine” provider with its Ryzen 5 series as well.

The key to the performance lies in both the number of compute cores and the number of threads. The 1600 and 1600X have six cores and 12 threads – 72 compared to 16 on the Intel i5-7600K. It has also managed to meet Intel’s thermal design power of 65W.

Jim Anderson, senior vice-president and general manager, Computing and Graphics Group, AMD, said, “AMD Ryzen is a proven game-changer, ultimately bringing innovation and competition back across PC market segments, and we are excited to introduce the next tier of AMD Ryzen processors to the market today.

"AMD Ryzen 5 revitalizes the mid-section of the desktop market, offering consumers excellent pricing while providing a smooth and impressive overall experience, whether for high-performance gaming or demanding applications.”

AMD Ryzen 5 1600X and 1600 models are claimed to be two of the highest-performing and lowest power 6-core desktop processors, offering high-quality 1080p/60 FPS/3500Kbps game streaming.

AMD Ryzen 5 1500X and 1400 are said to be designed for performance gaming and processing featuring 4 processor cores with 8 threads for high-performance gaming and processing, with AMD SenseMI Technology to analyse and adapt to customer needs.
